another weld penetration thread

I'll wait to be corrected.....But ..i think you are being very cautious...if the weights were dropped they would land on a bar which is drilled through the frame ? these welded joints stop the frames splaying apart...I don't think your welds will come under the full weight at all.....
.Why not weld straps or tags to the crosspieces and bolt them to the uprights ,could be dismantled and moved then? looks like you like drilling holes too
.I wouldn't grind the radius edge at all,gaps on the fillets can lead to distortion and I would normally do exactly the same as Paul,but I know my welder would penetrate ok...
If I was that worried,I over engineer the job ,perhaps use webs or other design tweaks to reduce the strain on the joint......can you post some pics of the test penetration ?

I dont have any, but i can get some up tomorrow as i am doing more work on it.

Yes you are right in saying the welds arnt really going to come into stress as the weight is goign down onto the frame, not against it. i just tend to over design things. i was actually going to add gussets into the corner and stitch them. i know, overkill

heres some more runs. had an offcut from my project so was tempted to try again.

adjusted the wire a bit and slowed down.. pics suggest it's a little too much wire due to spatter but i will turn it down a fraction. not sure if the spatter was from those runs or when my liner was sticking when i tacked it in place.

got some anti spatter spray so i will use that on the parts you will see anyway.

did a few butt welds today as i could swear this thing isnt performing right.

i have attached some pics. max power setting and tried welding as a normal pace and another slower pace. Cant seem to get to see the back of the weld. id say there is about 0.8mm gap still at the back.

wasnt a perfect butt together so really the welded hap the help of a tiny gap too.


thought id take a look inside the machine. one of the capacitors is loose and been shorting (cap terminal melted slightly). I have taken is out and tightened it back up. wonder if this has anything to do with it?

Think i may have found a problem. a capacitor was loose on the buss bars and was shorting out. the terminals on the cap are melted.

Gonna give everything else a check over tomorrow, rectifier etc.
