Another way to remove spark plugs

Struggling to figure out a way to remove spark plugs from your Subaru?

You have tried magnetics on sticks and sticky stuff in the socket but they just lie loose in the bottom of the spark plug well?

Try an industrial vacuum cleaner


They land in the vacuum cleaner with a satisfying clunk

Just push a bit of rubber hose over the neck of the plug once its cracked loose and unscrew. Also works for refitting and stops you getting it cross threaded because the rubber will slip before you apply too much damaging force.

I have to do that on our MX5, the plugs sit at the bottom of a deep hole between the cams.

heater hose,i stuff a short piece in the plug socket,it pulls the plug out with the socket.

Mine has as well, but the Mazda has smaller plugs, this means I have to use a ordinary long series socket. Perhaps I'm to tight to buy the proper socket!

If the engine stops with a valve open it just comes straight out and up the vacuum cleaner hose

I have a Subaru and many a skinned knuckle I've had changing the spark plugs on it. The first time took 2 hours - 1/2 an hour for 3 and the rest of the time on the other one as the socket would not go onto it due to a build up of corrosion and crud round the plug!

I'm just wondering how you manage to get a hoover into the plug hole?

How do you get a stuck fast one out without risking breaking it though? With the engine still in place?

I heard a good tip from a mechanic for removing stuck injectors this week. Squirt with Cillit bang and leave for a while. May well work for corroded in plugs as well.

If the cylinder is firing leave well alone

Have a word with a few local garages, we have a bloke who travels round removing snapped studs and fitting Helicoils etc, as he does them day in day out he will have more experience of doing it.
I would leave it in if it runs ok.
Its not the end of the world if you strip it as threaded inserts are available

If you break one on a subaru it's an engine out job anyway!

If anyone is interested the Elora spark plug sockets with rubber in are really good. Not cheap though.

Yeah, that's the point its seized in tight and not yet broken! Its staying that way because its working but one day.............
