Evening all, been rummaging around here for a while, thought I might have the odd thing to contribute so here I am.
Taught myself to make two bits of metal stick together... but I wouldn't call it welding
Actually my old man showed me the rudiments of the gas axe when I was 12 as he repaired cars for a living (well, he never called it 'living'), I did City & Guilds in car repairs so played with a bit of stick (building engine stands, but no actual car welding ) but I had to buy my own MIG set before I really got to play. Started with a SIP 90A when Halfords were unloading them (£80, bargain!) then got an old Oxford 120s MIG set given by a mate because it was faulty. As my main line of work is electronics it didn't take long to fix and is a damn fine piece of kit though I have yet to see another one. Apparently it won a Design Council award back in the day.
A busting urge to be able to weld aluminium had me searching for an AC TIG set but after being outbid about 100 times on Ebay I gave up and bought a new one... branded 'SMP' it came from a company in Kidderminster and is proving to be good enough for what I need.
As to what I use this kit for: well I have a fetish for old TVRs, so that's reason enough but most of my welding is actually for work. I use my gear; they, er, make it worth my while. Allegedly.
Amongst other things I build equipment used to give rodents massive doses of radiation (used in cancer research etc.) and the cabinets use 1.1 tonne of lead so although it doesn't have to be pretty it has to be strong!
I've also fabricated sliding doors for x-ray bays using up to 12mm of lead. For fun I play with the fuel injection on my TVR and have produced modified inlet manifolds etc.
My home workshop is reasonable: Boxford lathe, Bridgeport and Perrin mills, Guyson sandblaster, bandsaw, SIP 100L compressor, powder-coating gear, air tools, 2T crane, yadda yadda... I suppose I could include the x-ray equipment but if I did the HSE would be knocking on my door
I'm also a biker, kayaker, cyclist, fell walker and aficionado of proper British beer (none of that poncy lager nonsense )
Right, if you'll excuse me I have some skirting boards to install. I really must get a tube of that 'No More F***ing DIY' from B&Q...
