picked up this little box trailer on freecycle. tows nicely and seemed quite solid. collected a few loads of topsoil in it with no problem. decided today to whip a wheel bearing out so i can go and get them matched up (both are adjusted as tight as i dare and still loads of play)

before i'd got that far, i sidetracked myself. hmm, that side panel looks a little loose. so using no tools at all, it kinda then looked like this
i had intended to just whack the rotten wooden box off and replace it with a box section frame with some galv sheet on, but the metal below has been attacked by tinworm quite nicely.
the main chassis (if you can call it that!) below this is in good shape, just in need of a bit of a clean up and some more solid fixings for the suspension units.
it would be useful if the trailer was slightly wider. one of the intended uses for it is delivering buckets of used cooking oil, and it'd be good to be able to get more than 4 in at a time. i don't want them in the car again as one of them split last time and it was impossible to get the smell out of the back seat
should i make the box as wide as the original wheel arches were, but with inset wheel archs, if that makes sense. or would it be better to make the chassis wider (slightly narrower than my car) and have a square/rectangle box that sits between the arches as before.
if i go for the second option do i widen the existing or just go buy a pile of box and start afresh?
comments and sugestions welcomed
