I have for years been an advocate of retaking the driving test every few years - it would save countless lives, but of course it would also be a pain in the but, and very unpopular...Yeah that was my point

Tow with both unlocked and the hitch rolls so the trailer weight is on the opening jaw. What recovery wagons are you running?Going back to the point made about the NATO jaws, I understand that this only applies to EU countries so now we are out of that, does it apply here? Also, don't think it's retrospective so would depend upon the age of the vehicle that it's fitted to. I've to ex Army heavy recovery lorries both with Nato hitches and two Land Rover Defenders which both have a Nato hitch for use with a Dixon Bate adjustable plate. Can't see an alternative to them as the ring hitch on a Sankey is too thick to fit in a pin and ball type hitch. Think some of the problems have occured with people towing with both a swivelling eye on the trailer and the Nato hitch not locked so that both swivel. Normally warning stickers on the Army trailers against this.
I've had two Sankey trailers and they both towed beautifully behind the Defenders.
I've got a Foden 6 x 6 Eka and a Scammell Explorer.Tow with both unlocked and the hitch rolls so the trailer weight is on the opening jaw. What recovery wagons are you running?
It’s not, no. If it was then grandfather rights would have been done away with and everyone would require a trailer test. It’s in your vested interest to make it out that the trailer test is the best thing since sliced bread.
my old lady can legally drive a 7.5t wagon without needing another test, does it make it safe? No but yet they never changed it so she would have to did they. You’ll not convince me it’s anything other than a money generator, you cannot say oh well they’re fine not needing it but someone that took their test 2 months later and gals under the new regs, having passed the same test is suddenly a more unsafe driver
This is the issue. People dont know what they dont know.Just playing devils advocate I have driven a 7.5T but not towed with one. I will practice when I get the 3.5T trailer for the workshop move. If I am crap I will get some training
Cant think of a single safety test that is free never mind the training for one.100%
if it was to do with safety they would make it a free test.
On the flip side, you get the heroes that pass the test and suddenly think they are the worlds best haulers. The attitude that the test suddenly makes you an amazing driver and super safe is the problem, the same as the driving test. All it does is make people believe that’s all they will ever need to know until they’re upside down on the carriageway wondering why it went wrongyou cant take a licence off someone that they already hold.
They stop people having it because it was unsafe just like your old lady.
They are moving to a safer way of everyone having to pass the test.
Ah lovely. I’ve a soft spot for the foden EKA, I always liked the mk3 militant over the explorer though!I've got a Foden 6 x 6 Eka and a Scammell Explorer.
What I am finding is it all depends on the attitude coming to the training.People would do what they have to do to pass the test then fall back into the way they drive normally.

Yes, MK3 Militant was always on the wish list but one hell of a complicated lorry to work on. Great if you've a REME squad waiting in the wings. Explorer is a lot simpler but doesn't have so many features.Ah lovely. I’ve a soft spot for the foden EKA, I always liked the mk3 militant over the explorer though!
I missed out on a Martian a few years back, seller gave back word at the last minute as he didn’t want to sell to a young lad. The Martian recovery had all the gear but that dumb little Rolls petrol engine that could barely pull your bed clothes off. Been some good Diesels grafted in to make them more useable. Still a few come up for sale every now and then.I missed out on a Martian a few years back, seller gave back word at the last minute as he didn’t want to sell to a young lad. Always regret that one
Nice cummins would make it a good performerThe Martian recovery had all the gear but that dumb little Rolls petrol engine that could barely pull your bed clothes off. Been some good Diesels grafted in to make them more useable. Still a few come up for sale every now and then.
Be boring if it was comfy!Careful what you wish for, 14 ltr Cummins in this one doesn't make it any quicker, clean gear changing is almost impossible, and sitting behind that open exhaust stack with the PS oil tank burning my knees for 30+ miles was absolute torture!

I taught my 5 yr old granson to stop doing this with his pedal John deer and trailer last Saturday. Turn the opposite way, watch it coming 'round etc...I'm starting to think even the 750kg trailer limit should be removed.
A certain utility company bought new 750kg trailers to avoid the licensing issue, and began suffering from lots of trailers with cracked chassis, and vans with bent steps amongst new recruits. It transpires the easiest way to reverse, was to simply let the trailer jack knife against the van step, at which point the whole trailer will bounce sideways, eliminating any need to have any trailer handling skills.
