Another question while I think of it please

I studied up on the gravity fed guns before I started using one and the guys in the vids said to adjust the fan control to give about a hand span of fan with the gun about a hand span away from the surface.

I find that with the fan knob fully out on my Iwata I can only get a fan of about four or five inches ? and I am thinning the paint to the maximum recommended of 20% what am I doing wrong?

The gun is 1.4 nozzle I also have a 1.8 nozle and needle kit for spraying the primers

Maybe your pressure is not regulated well enough or it's set too low.

What paint? As only 2k is thinned that low and I thought you were using cellulose.

ok, well the Iwata company recommended 30 psi and I understood that too high a pressure would just create more over spray everywhere?

The paint I got is the standard metallic silver from Jawel, yes it's cellulose, the data says thin 1 to 1, but that seems a bit excessive

APPLICATION
Stir thoroughly, then thin 1:1 with the appropriate grade of thinners to give a spray viscosity of approximately 25 seconds Ford B4 Cup @ 20ºC.
Application is usually by conventional/HVLP Air Spray with any matched equipment. Apply 3 heavy "single" coats, or alternatively for a finish which will
need less burnishing apply 1 thinned coat (for a flatter dried paint surface), allow to dry for not less than 3 hours, wet flat with 800 or 1000 grade paper
and apply a further 2 single coats of further thinned Car cellulose topcoat colour, preferably using Non Bloom or M99 Thinners to obtain the best possible
flow.

Hello Flapdisc,

that is the standard thinning ratio for cellulose, or in other words 50% paint, 50% thinners. Often the last two or three coats is more thinners than paint to get a good flow.

Strewth mate I learn something every day that would be like water, wouldn't it be really hard to spray without runs?

All down to technique really mate. Your base coat (met/mica/solid) should not look like a finish coat but needs to be built up very evenly over at least 3 coats then a drop coat pre clear coat. On a large panel, you will need the paint to be quite thin so as to avoid heavy areas and dry spots which is why it is thinned 1:1

By the way, I use a gravity Iwata AZ40 with 1.4 @45psi (at the gun) I get a beautifully clean 6" fan. Same gun??

Ok thanks Nick mate, Mine is the AZ3 HTE2 it says up to 2mm nozzle 2bar at the gauge on the gun ?

I have that gun with 1.3mm tip and you should be able to get an extremely good finish with it.

30 PSI trigger pulled, measured with a gauge at the gun.

Thanks mate, yes that's what I do, I think the main problem I have gleaned from the help you guys have given is that I am not thinning the paint enough, I will be spraying the roof about Wednesday so I will thin more and let you know how it goes, the clear I got is RFU so should I trust that is thin enough?

1k clear is ready for use (RFU), i.e. already thinned.

If its a AZ3 HTE2 then you have either a 1.3 or 1.5 fluid tip, there is quite a bit of difference in the fan size between the two, I personally prefer the 1.5.

Hmmm I know Langy but I have no facility for spraying 2k, was a time 1k was all there was, it was good enough then
