Another plastering question.

I have a section of wall on my landing which is quite rough - looks like it's been rendered, rather than plastered.

It's too narrow to get a float in, but SWMBO reckons that I could make a thin batch of plaster (single cream consistency) and paint it on rather than skimming it.
It's going to be painted over.

Can't find any trace of the technique on Google, but GF insists it's how her (builder(ish)) father used to sort small areas.
I think it'll just dry out, crack, and flake off because if it's thin enough to put on with a brush, it's too thin.

Gyprok Easyfill and a small filling knife. Sand when dry and repeat as needed.

Basically how I was gonna do it, although I was going to use up the last bit of toupret tx110 rather than go buy something else.

This is more a question as to whether SWMBO's suggestion is usable?

Can't see it giving a good finish tbh and plasters a pig to sand. Curious to hear the answer too. Keep trying to find time to learn to plaster. Can render and screed. Just need practice for timings.

I still have nightmares about grouting one kitchen. mosaic tiles. Glass and stone. The house was that hot the grout set in about 1/4 of the time. Queue a major cleaning session.

Its consistency that I struggle with, I do this so infrequently I never remember what gets best results, by the end of the job I'm not that bad but getting going in the first place.

Anyway, @bigegg as you can see I'm not able to advise one way or the other but that paint on method does seem fraught with cracking issues. I'd use a putty knife or scraper (or make a small float) depending on the size of the access. I have a hexagonal window and the surround is a nightmare to get right and a 'proper builder' did it for me... he used a tiny trowel and a long thin float about 6 inches by 1 1/2 inches and combined with him knowing what to do in the first place.... he made it look easy.

What about something like polyfiller?

It sands way easier than plaster. Put it on, smooth it with a wet sponge, and then sand when dry.

Used that to finish off a few chases and patches lately... filled a few mm shy with render then a light coat of the easyfill to finish off. Easy to get smooth and easy to sand if you don't!

Another vote for the easy fill. Use a wide scraper to get it mostly level then attack it with some 120 on a wide pad. Gives great results

I did a few small repairs for the neighbour, His house has what seems to be a render under coat and skimmed on top with plaster, it seperated in places so i used pva watered down to prime it which helps stop it flaking off more the fill and sand. As i end up doinf quite a few spot repairs i use the ready mixed gyproc joint filler.

its only a tiny strip down the side of a door - I'm going to just use filler.
As I said, its more a question of "has anyone else heard of this method?" than anything else

When you come to sand get yourself a Mirka Hand Sander:

It's a bit spendy at £30 for what it is but it's brilliant, I bought one and the sanding nets last ages, don't clog up and there is no dust.

A friend of mine bricked a door hole up and did as your missus is suggesting and it worked well, it is an old diy method used by people who don't plaster. Just drag it over with the edge of a scraper to flatten it off. Sanding plaster sounds like defeating the object of putting it on in the first place. If you catch it at the right point you can smooth it off with a sponge or wet rag better than sanding then finish it with a straight edge on anything, narrow trowel or scraper.

Not heard of that method, I would just go with the filler and sand smooth, I have seen people use render to repair plaster int he past and its always a paint to work round.

if you mean that stupid little part between the corners of the walls and achitrives best way take it off and plaster it then put it back on again

If it's like all the rest of the landing, if I take off the architrave, the whole wall will need replastering.
Done with easyfill, using a 1.99 set of filling knives from screwfix.
