Hi, I'm looking to buy a welder for at home it would be mostly for bike/trike related work, I've been using an old arc welder of my dad's and have used mig for bits and pieces at work. Mostly it will be used to add on to an existing frame but eventually I'd like to progress onto making frames and tanks etc so I'd like recommendations as to manufacturer and type? I know you can mig a frame but can you use it for tanks? I'm hoping to spend approx 300 for the machine I know I will need extra items

for 300 quid you wont get a new hf tig set so you are really limited to either an inverter arc welder with lift tig or a decent second hand mig such as a Clarke 151 or 160TM. you will also need a bottle of shielding gas, either co" or argon mix for mig or pure argon for tig. also need a mask, gauntlets, decent pair of overalls, wire brush, cutting discs and flap wheels.
for 300 quid starting from scratch you are really looking at second hand for anything decent mig wise, and if you wanted tig you really need hf for the stuff you want to do.
migging tanks is a tricky one, depends on material thickness and joint type. I have seen a tank being repaired with mig but never seen one being made other than with tig

I already have the ppe and grinder etc as I'm a mechanic, but I know very little about welders I've always just used whatever was there and set them up however I felt comfortable and could use them.
I was thinking around 1 to 2 mm thick steel for the tank nothing too complex shape wise probably a coffin tank, basically I've been given a bike to make a chop out of practising techniques for a proper chop once I've done my test, which would have been a lot cheaper if I'd done it at 17 not 29!
