Yes it is, I just searched for it and the lower shock bolt where it goes through into the swingarm (steel into alloy) is a royal pain, siezes and its recessed.
I managed to shatter a decent allen key trying to undo one.

Always fancied a BMW boxer but never ridden anything bigger than a 500 twin and haven't been out on it in 10 years. Think I'd need to re acclimatise myself to the 500 before tackling anything bigger.

Nah, just take it easy until you find your feet again.
The biggest I had before was a CBR600 (3 of them) and then sold the last one to buy a lathe. 10 years later I almost bought a KTM but a van came up at the same time so I bought that instead, still regret that
then last year I bought the Africa Twin CRF1100, that was a 25 year break from bikes but I am loving it.

I've never owned a Ducati, so I can't comment directly on those except to say that the IOM for the TT is a great place to see just about every type and make of bike. The last time I went I saw more Ducatis broken down than any other make of bike. Non-starts on damp camp sites, sitting at the side of the road, Douglas prom, the list went on.
The list of cons is considerable for modern bikes in general. From the 'black box' approach to the systems, servicing, unnecessary (to my mind) gadgetry cost of ownership etc. Perhaps it would be worth you considering something 15 - 20 years old that's mint and low mileage? Looking at that sort of age most of the cons disappear, and for a Ducati in particular it will have had all the upgrades and recalls sorted.
That said, there is nothing sensible about owning a motorbike. So whatever make or model, if you like it, can afford it and will get enjoyment from it then forget the reviews/opinions and buy it.

The R1200GS is probably the sensible choice - really comfy, surprisingly quick, good handling and reasonable reliability also the low centre of gravity makes it feel lighter than it is. Just the Boorman/MacGregor effect puts me off.

I don’t know anyone who’s owned a Ducati and hasn’t had some sort of disgustingly expensive failure. Wouldn’t be given one.
I’ve recently developed a hankering for a ktm 640 adventure, not as much of a lump as the bigger adventures so can have more of a play off road. I never got on with the bmw gs bikes, they feel insanely wide and uncomfortable on the hips

Shouldn't mock, but it is funny, you start to see them at this time of year. Massive aluminium panniers all stickered up for adventure products, rider in spangly new adventure/trail riding gear, all ready to take on the outback/Amazon/Road of Bones, and there they are pottering along the dual carriageway or motorway.
They're doing no harm, but I can't help but laugh. I could never own one for that reason alone, it'd be a permanent source of embarrassment. The only other group that would come close are the lawyers, accountants and insurance salesmen who dress up like the Black Widows and follow the 'road captain' on their Harleys for a ride out.

Three KTM's and only expense other than servicing and consumables was a water pump shaft and rectifier, less than £200 to sort.

I’ve just got in from looking at a BMW R65 - a friend is selling his father’s old machine, one owner from new, comes together with a crashed one (bent forks and front wheel), plus another ex-gendarmerie one for spares. We haven’t talked money yet…

Nice little bikes, easy to work on, did make some special tools and a pleasant reliable ride.
I keep thinking of buying one of the F800GS Adventures, but I like my old XT. Certainly not the fastest, could do with being a bit faster on the motorways and keep thinking of making a bigger tank, but is relaxing and enjoyable to ride in winter and summer. I can do all my maintenance, don't need to buy valve shims just an oil filter every second change, a spark plug every now and then, and an air filter is an even rarer purchase.

My Ducati owner ship was short both times…….Ss750 mid 90s bought new…..minor fault after minor fault, so got rid.
As I aged I had a hankering for another one. Bought a 748 but I was the wrong size and shape for it. Only had it about 3 months. Sold it on and made a 100 quid proft. Personally speaking I don't think product matches the price.
