Another home decor job. Masonry paint

Getting along well, fascia boards and gutters are ll sorted after some nightmares bodges were uncovered.
Cracks in the render mostly excavated and filled. Big thanks for previous advice sessions.

Painting the exterior walls. the bathroom is a dodgy extension on an ancient welsh terrace, I have removed all the loose paint and filled the cracks in the render I have been advised to use decent masonry paint which I'm happy to do, but the Girlfriend has a 15l tub of this stuff which looks the dogs danglies on her house, applied with a trowel by a plasterer. He says it can be brushed on. It looks like a very gritty painty stuff.
I have no idea what I am doing so what do you guys think?
it looks like it ought to work but I dont want to have any disasters later on.

Its a render Mike.
The stuff they skim over exterior insulation.

May find it cracks as it will be on the original bricks rather than a semi isolated covering

Edit. It's not. Paint to go over the render.
May be specifically formulated to key to their products

Do a test patch somewhere out of the way and see how it holds up.

That stuff is only 1 part of a 3 part system for applying to bare rendered walls. I doubt if it would stick properly to already painted walls.

My goto masonry paint is Crown stronghold but dulux weathershield is also good.

BUT ONLY buy it from a good independent or an own brand store like a dulux decorating centre or jonstones paint shop. The branded stuff the chain stores like B&Q sell is watered down & not true to colour - that's why they can sell it cheaper!

Stuff you want is stormsheild pliolite its resin based not water

Top stuff,depending how the surface is i'd put a miss-coat on first(thats say half a can thinned down depending area covering),then neat topcoat.
It can be rolled or brushed on,again thin it down a little for ease of use.
WARNING,cover everything and anything you dont want the stuff to go on,its a sod to remove esp off brickwork

Cheers all, I like the idea of posh paint for free but the one I have been offered does look to be part of a 'system' I think bog standard masonry paint but not the cheapo stuff is the answer.
Next job is to choose colours

What's the wall painted with at the moment? Traditionally walls used to dry out by evaporation to the outside. Then people started painting waterproof stuff on. It doesn't stop water getting in. Cracks after a while. But still really good at stopping water getting out. If your walls have not already suffered waterproof paint it might be worth looking at something breathable like silicate stuff. Or limewash (that's what I used and it's dead cheap).

There are umpteen coats of masonry paint and in some places no idea what he used. On the garden walls there was a layer of what looked like screed, weird greeny/grey stuff that chisels off.
The man was mad

I that case you are safe to do what you like. I had most of my masonry paint stripped at vast expense because it was causing damp. There was some at the front on bricks ventilated to the inside that would have been difficult to remove and I used a limewash called Pozilime over that. Lovely deep matt mould resistant finish that comes in pretty colours. https://www.ingilby.co.uk/shop/-p100056921

Does take a lot of coats. Think I did one of that then 4 coats of limewash.

Totally agree, the next thing then is damp inside and start injecting walls to stop the damp that is somehow raising 4-5 foot above the ground, the reality is it's like a cup filling with water.

Pulling the render off some traditional stone walls irradicated the damp in one my rooms within a few days. No doubt some specialist would have had me dry lining and damp proofing

Pulling the render off some traditional stone walls irradicated the damp in one my rooms within a few days. No doubt some specialist would have had me dry lining and damp proofing

I'm planning to damp proof a thin concrete floor so I can replace the mouldy carpet with nice parquet. Water is going to try to escape up the walls when I do that. Somewhat annoying they've been tanked as it would have been nice to let the water escape inside until I get the masonry paint off the outside (and sort out ground levels).

my damp all seems to be around windows and external fittings eg drain pipes fixed into huge wooden plugs and painted over a million times, bit by bit I do seem to be eradicating it. Not helped by blistering paint and cracks in the render which bit by bit I am sorting out. There was a dodgy extension fitted in the 70's by the look of it, the rest of the house seems sound.
