Another fixings question

I am making a sculpture based on Japanese Calligraphy.
My customer wants his daughters name 3m tall running up the atrium in his house.
The calligraphy part is straightforward, he has had that done professionally and I am going to scale it up using an OHP.

The plan is to have the letters mounted just proud of the wall by about 60mm I dont eant any fixings on the front of them ir holes or anything.
One idea is small tabs on the back that slip onto bolts from the wall.
What fixings would anybody reccomens to use into the wall?

There seems to be an infinite variety of fixings available, so I bet there is an ideal solution out there.

What is the Atrium wall made of? Chem fix is a simple secure way to fit bolts or bespoke fittings

I think it is brick
I was thinking studs fixed with resin and maybe a small tube to hide the thread with a nut on the end.

how about floating nut plates screwed to the wall first where required

then use stud joiner nuts welded to back of each letter

use 6mm studding and nuts the stud joiner is only 10mm across the hexagon flats
use the long stud joiner nuts welded on end to the back of each letter, cut studding to length required for stand off, run a free nut onto each of the studding first, then screw the stud all the way into the stud joiner nut which are about 25mm long, that then allows you to unscrew the stud freely but at the same time start the thread into the capitve nut on the wall, you can then adjust the stand off and 'level' each letter, simply, by the point at which the stud bites the thread in the nut plates, then lock the free nut onto the stud joiner nut to lock it all up i would guess two or three studs for each letter, to get the nut plate centres just make a paper template of the welded nuts centres, transfer that to the wall for the centres of the wall nut plates. just re read first post and realise they are 3metres tall paper template may not work then unless you use a roll.

The only problem with resin is having to hold each till it goes off and if they need to decorate the wall they cannot remove and replace, but with the studs it is simple to unscrew and replace

they will all look naff imo...

tube spacer with flat bottom and slotted hole for stud, chemical fixed in wall, nut & washer down tube gives some movement to align . Peg of suitable size to slide into said tube fixed to back of letters and one or 2 grub screws to lock tube and peg.

needs accurate fitting but will look right... could be finished same as letters, stainless or painted to disapear

How chunko is the lettering going to be chunky?

How about welding a couple of bits of 40x6 flat on the reverse (50mm long or so) with a hole in...and use a glass clamp? Possibly even paint/powder the same colour as the artwork...

That way you can screw the clamps to t he wall, then fit the artistry, nice neat job i'd think.....and could be removed in a few moments with just an allen key to allow redecoration etc....
Frame fixers or similar should fit in the screw hole in the bracket, they tend to be M8 usually.

Either that, just weld some bits of round bar to the back, then drill and resin the whole thing into the wall to the desired depth and make good around the holes in the wall.

I dont want anything on the front of it, it has to be completely flat, there is room to hide stuff behind the pieces.
Here is a photo of the 3/4 scale drawing. Total height of the whole thing will be about 2.7m
The plan is I cut them out, clean them to a shiny finish then treat with gunblue.
I think one moun ton the smaller bits aand two on the larger ones.

Ideally we want them to appear to have no fixings on the back.

Going through the ideas coming in I will sort something out.

Ahh, miss understood there I pictured it as one sort of joined up piece... ... Mounted on stainless tension wires perhaps?

Did a similar sort of thing a while ago, each letter was fixed with a single rod resined into the wall. Bit awkward to do, but looked good.

I'd use rawl bolts

They're what I'd go with too, with some tube of whatever length for the standoff on the rear of the letters, with a keyhole piece welded onto the end to slip over the bolt head.

I reckon simple stand off rods, those button thingies look worth bearing in mind for future missions.
If I use rawl bolts is it just drill your holes push them and do up the nut to set them?
And have two nuts on the end fixed to the letters.

Rawlbolts won't work in bricks with 'oles in them.

Stud and resin in the holes all the way, weld the stud on first set the whole thing up marking the required holes and fill the holes with resin, you will just need to find a way to hold then for a few mins. Very little use for rawl bolts these days myself, just when you think that's about it they very often go wrong in a whole number of annoying ways.

If your struggling to hold the things while the resin sets then use Nominal bore tube on the figures themselves as a good fit over the ready fixed and firmed up stud and then weld the overfit joint with a couple of tacks, have a look see from the front then stich them on firm and perminant. Just be sure you can get a rod in were you place those N/B collars on the rear of the figures.

I'd chem fix some threaded studs in the wall then use a tube spacer and dome nut from a tab on the back, might be worth making a 3mm ply template up with the drill holes on first. Hang that and move it around to clear the mortar joints and look correct.
