Another drill on eBay, ideas to get it home?

Does anyone know of a pallet shipping company that will take oversized pallets? (1.2x2.0 meters I believe). The seller says he can secure it to one but I've only managed to find one courier and they wanted £100.

EDIT: The max height for a regular pallet is 2.1 meters, If this is below that I could have it delivered on a normal pallet for a much easier £65. I've asked the seller to measure it.

My Pollard 1AX is just over 1.9m tall, footprint of the base is around 500 x 350mm. Take the belt cover off (fibreglass on mine so relatively fragile) and drop the telescopic spindle as low it'll go and it's probably ~ 1.7m.

I'm not very good at estimating weights of stuff and obviously awkwardness/shape effects how heavy they feel but like i said it took 3 or 4 of us to get the base of mine into the back of my car*. Managed to get it out with just one helper but then we had gravity on our side! While two of us could just pick it up it was too heavy to carry any distance comfortably... i can just about manage a complete beetle engine single handed and they weigh a bit over 100kg and are more of an awkward shape so i'd be surprised if the base complete with table is much less than 250kg. I reckon closer to 300kg.
The top is definately under 100kg... i took the motor off (much bigger and heavier than a cheap generic single phase motor of similar 'rated' power) to make it more comfortable so i'm guessing maybe 80-90kg complete

*an old merc estate which the drill turned into a lowrider until i started it up and the self levelling suspension got to work

Anything big and heavy is best shifted in a trailer. I have moved a 400kg drill and a 300kg lathe in the past. Trailers are lower than van floors and there's no roof to get in the way of any engine crane needed to lift it off the floor. Trolleys (not shoppping ones) or dollies are very handy to move stuff about. Pallets are good if you are paying professionals to move stuff.

He only old enough for a scooter, I think even a Peugeot Streetfighter would struggle with 300kgs of pillar drill on it!

I'm assuming they used fibreglass at some point, dunno whether they switched to it or (more likely?) from it to a simpler pressed steel design but mine looks identical to this 1AX

The handwheel is a 1/2 turn deal and when turned the belt cover pops straight up on an elaborate spring loaded telescopic gizmo that IIRC incorporates the interlock switch

That's a fancier setup on yours. Mine, (bench top model, not a pedestal), uses the same style of cover as in that photo Maker posted. No interlock and a ball nut has to be unscrewed to get the cover off. It's made from either cast ali' or monkey metal, (if it's owt like the switch cover which literally partially disintegrated in my hand when I removed it ), with a steel tube for the spindle.

I didn't win it, it went for £215. The good news is there's two, close enough for me to collect, though not as cool as this one. One is a Progress and the other is a Rockwell.

Finally got quotes back from them, £233, 235 and £295. Not my definition of 30% cheaper than elsewhere when a standard pallet is £65 and a large pallet is £100.

I have taken to using an app to browse ebay, it's marketed under the "money saving expert" brand and searches for all items listed as collection only within a specified radius. Saves me considering stuff that's too too many miles away.

maker, try uship or anyvan, the shiply quotes would and will come down, try and put the right weight and sizes in the request, you can get quotes for anything to see what price`s you may have to pay, i did a lot of work off these sites, but, if you win some thing and class your request as needs picking up as i have won it your quotes will be lower, just be prepared to wait for your delivery though as it will be part of a milk run, the prices you have at mo i would want a dedicated van for that
