Angles of dangle?

I thought this would be easy to do and so far I'm failing miserably!

What I want to do is convert a certain amount of slope (imagine a roof) from degrees to 1-in-x. All the web pages I can find launch into formulas and trigonometry, which are two of the days I was off school.

Does anyone know how to do this easily, or where I can find a simple conversion table?

Here is an explanation, and a simple formula (and a chart at the end)

For any angle Θ (given in degrees):



The equivalent rise over run can be expressed as "1-in-x"...
All you need to do is "find x" using the below formula:





An example using Windows Calculator

1. Run windows Calculator and Click on view menu and select "Scientific"


2. Check your calculator is set to "Degrees" (and not Radians or Graduations)


3. Enter degrees on calculator (eg 30 degrees)


4. Press TAN


5. Press 1/x button


30 degrees is approx 1 in 1.73

I normally draw 2 lines in a programme such as autocad, then measure the angle.
