i used to have a makita was the best iv had it broke after years of my dad useing it and 10 years of me abuseing it replaced it with a jcb lasted 2 years then 2 new tool one i was given about 6 month for one and 3 week for the other now got a 9" makita have used for 2 years cuting steel stone and concete had bushs in it thats it and it has had some heavey work as out sthil saw broke so it got all the stone work. got a small jcb same as my first but 110v rather than 240v its ok ill buy another next time there on offer at makro £15 and 2 years work is ok but will be geting a makita agian jcb stuff is very hit and minn thay do a grinder the same as the nutool and its crap mines the ones with the handle like the 9" makita gona have 3 a jcb for cuting one for a grinding and the makita for a flap disc hows that for lazzy may even buy a 4th for a wire brush lol

im afraid ive got three cheepos, one 9 inch silverline, one 4 inch thing from homebase, and a 9 quid 4.5 inch one from aldi- and surprisingly the cheapest one (from aldi) is the best!

I treat the the 4.5" jobbies as consumables. If I was to spend more than £15 on one I'd be constantly worrying about all the dust, shrapnel etc that the motor was swallowing up. With the cheapies I just give it all the abuse it can take and should it break then I just get a new one. The last couple I got from Screwfix and are standing up to the punishment pretty well

I used to sware by Bosch blue then I had mine stolen all 14 of them these were years old and the modles I had had all been discontinued bearing in mind 1 of them I brought when I was 17 and it was 13 years old and had been used every day costing me 2 brackets for gards 3 sets of brushes a gearbox gear and about 30 new cables. I replaced the lot and after 3 weeks they started to fall to bits after 4 months not one was fit to use.
I have then tried every make ( profesional ) and killed Milwalkie Dewault hitachi and Makita I have come to the conclusion if you want a grinder to last makita lasts the longest a 9" grinder will do about 9 months if you are lucky of work but this has always been the case where as modern 4.5" grinders are a waste of time get the 5" 1000wand bigger and they will give you a years hard work if you are lucky.
I have found that makita last the longest out of the 5 and 9" grinders
I have not tried Matebo
my old company did used to give grinders a bit of hammer I have sent lads out on structual work (modifications ) and they have taken a box of cutting blades and a 9" grinder to cut beams around as it is easier than lugging gas bottles around.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee make real nice tools. They are popular here for professional use.

I have a Milwaukee portable metal band saw and it works well. It is not real accurate, but the motor and bearings are heavy duty. Also has an all metal case.

I know there are contractors that use nothing but Milwaukee tools. I have a buddy that borrowed as SawsAll from a contractor and will not give it back

Millwaulkee used to do good tools I used to run 5 of their loktor 18v battery drills at a time and they nearly lasted a year which was the best I had I have had a millwaulkee 9" grinder it did about 5 weeks total garbage then I got a 28v Lion battery drill this did about 4 months I sent it back on the 5 year warrentee thinking I had got a bad one and dont just bin it and dismiss the tool I then got a letter back with it stating I had abused it and they had repaired it under good will but it no longer had any warentee on the motor. it lasted 3 weeks with the new motor. the original millwalkee tools were good but the new ones are a total waste of money.

personally i'd go for makita got 10yr old chop saw 20yr old screw guns and picked up a mini grinder for £35 and a full size big boy 110v un for £60 so hope they last for the price can't remember if hilti do them but if i have the extra cash i'd get hold of them and get one most come with 2yrs warranty and if it breaks send a fed ex to your home and pick it up free had a rip saw blow up it cost £130 (blew the motor and guards casing it was bugged)to have it fixed came back good as new with in a week

Another merciless grinder user.Have killed loads of them, Makita lasted about three weeks then BANG. I like to have three available at a time one each for, grinding, cutting and brushing.
Dewalt has gone on for ages, buying a new one soon.

As it happens, I bought a makita (was on sale).
In the 13 months I've had it, its had a hell of a lot of use and abuse, and is still going strong.

if they're being used for a hobby rather than your livelyhood, I'd have (and do have) 2 cheap-ish grinders rather than 1 quality/expensive one.

Great minds think alike!
I used to have a good quality grinder, but when that finally gave up the ghost I shopped around for a new Grinder.
I use it professionally, and some days it gets a real hammering.
In the end I bought a Cheap Draper one for £18
For the cost of a better quality one, I can buy 5 cheapo grinders for that money
9 months later and the cheapo Draper one is still running fine.
Plus it is only 630W which means it is a lot lighter than some of the heavier grinders.
They are more than adequate for Home use
I use the Draper with a Rubber Backing Pad and Sanding discs.
I also have a heavier Duty Halfords Grinder set up all the time with a Cutting Disc.
