You could have tried a 6" one first, not as heavy. If you think it is heavy then you are probably not up to using it, sorry.

Gloves are no help, you are holding the grinder so your hands are safe, it is the rest of your body that is at risk.

Anyway back on subject im hoping the weather warms up for tomorrow, im hoping to make some wall brackets out of some lengths of box section i bought from Hemswell market last sunday for a pound. So its chance to use my new grinder (But only if it warms up abit)

Cobminor - I could chop it closer to the ground? that way i dont have to lift the grinder up to bench/waist height. plus the one i bought has a swivle rear handle so its more comfortable to use when at an angle

It's not so much the weight it's the kickback you get if the disc snags. Also the inertia when it starts up can give quite a kick. Some machines now have a soft start circuit.

Lucky im a nurse then, that way if i do chop my leg off this weekend i will know what to do!

I have been looking into chop saws etc, but in the end now that I have a compressor, I will just save up and buy a plasma cutter 4'' grinder for the little stuff.

I was thinking of making a thing like that ... a 2' arm welded out of 3/4" square tube, picking up on the 3 handle threads of a big angle grinder, attach the whole thing to the workbench & pull down the handle to cut.

Then next to the $90 9-inch angle grinder I found a $99 abrasive miter saw and just bought that instead. It's nothing like as nice as a proper bandsaw or low RPM metal saw, but it does the business. Doesn't half make a noise though.
