Angle Grinder Safty

Just a quick post about Health & Safty:

Today I learnt a lesson, I was using my brothers angle grinder with a finishing disc, his grinder has not got a safty gaurd on it but ive learnt a lesson in the past about using safty glasses, ( not fun geting a piece in your eye )

NOW today all going well untill the grinder I was using with the finishing disc shatterd the disc into two pieces and projected into my stomach, went through two thick layers I had on. It was enough to put me on the floor for a few seconds, got nice graze and brusing up, painfull is one word without swairing.

This is the first disc I have shattered like this in about 15 years. Remember always leave the gaurd on!

A foot lower and it might have been rather more serious. Two nuts on the floor and the correct size spanner nowhere to be found

Could be nasty. The main reason for removing a guard is to fit an over-sized disc to the grinder. Both very dangerous practices.

Its a lesson for me, I remember about two years ago with a shard in my eye, since always used eye protection.

Gee its all brusing up and painfull at the moment, im still breathing so will be ok, lol, owch.

A good warning. How many times a day do I use an angle grinder? I remember the first time I used 1, I was scared to death of it. Now I use it on hand held bits of steel, quite happily, hmmmm. I have had one disc break, it was one of the very thin cutting discs, i found one part of it about 20 feet away, never saw the rest of it. Naughty things, be careful.

I did once drop one with a wire brush on it. Would have looked great on film. Theres me shouting B'stard B'stard, and trying to kick it to death as it charged around my feet, then I tried to catch the sucker and it nearly bit me. Oh!! I can turn it off. Pillock. I hope and prey (correct spelling) that I see somebody else do this one. Like something out of 'The Changes'* if anybody has a memory that long, and wasn't there a Steven King movie about machines going amock?

*obscure rubbish mid seventies TV sci fi series.

I got a 9" one trapped while I was cutting something the other day. Fortunately it didn't break but gave my arm one hell of a yank. It also tightened the nut up so hard I bent the spanner and had to take the entire thing apart to get the disc off.

once had a nut lock on for no reason bust the spinal lock trying to get it off! Ended up using big hammer and chisel there was a tiny piece of stone underneath that had dug into blade and back of nut

I remember using a 4" grinder under my land rover with a wire cup brush to clean up the chassis before painting. I was laid on my back and switched it off to put it down on because it switched on again as i dropped it to the floor. Looking back it must have looked hilarious as I lay there batting the thing away every second or two whilst trying to crawl out the other side, you would have sworn it was possessed. The next task was catching it and picking it up by the tail to switch it off!! (it never occured to me to switch off at the socket in all the excitement).

Have often thought the safety sockets with a foot operated Emergency stop button would be good for grinders

I've also discovered that though you can put a grinder down while it's still spinning if it has a cutting disc on, the same is not true if it has a flap disc on!

I had a 4.5inch angle grinder fitted with a twist knot cup brush leap out of my hands,smack me in the face (luckily I was wearing gloves,goggles,ear defenders & a dust mask) and then it grabbed my shirt on the left shoulder and virtually tore it off my back as it twisted round and round the wire brush.

All of this happened in about 2 seconds,and luckily for me the grinder stalled inside a huge knot of what used to be my shirt.

Scariest thing I have seen was when a local bikebreaker bought loads of 4x2 to build shelving, he used a big circular saw blade on a little angle grinder to cut the wood, looked scarey but I had a go and it wasn't that bad;-)

Funniest thing i saw was when my brother put a 12x3 sisal mop on a hand motor[straight grinder]heturned it on and the polisher leapt out of his hands and rolled the cable up till it got the other side of the garage and pulled the plug out..

My finest must be the really coarse wire brush bought for the polisher, I was using it on a 4-1/2 inch grinder and lots of bits were flying around. When I stopped everyone was rolling around laughing. I took a look in the mirror, I looked like a porcupine, the bits of wire were embeded in my hands and face.

You gotta love grinders.

The wire cup brushes that go on grinders are really crap in my opinion. They pepper you with bits of wire from the off.
Better to use the twisted wire wheels - generally cheeper, last longer and don't let go of wires on the way round. Don't let go though!

I was exactly like that when I first used a grinder, must have been about 14/15 at the time. These days I use one pretty much every time I get out to the garage.
