Angle Grinder safety

I have to admit I am rather scared of angle grinders.
Having watched this video perhaps being scared of them isn't so necessary. Obviously treat them with massive respect but probably riding a bike is more dangerous.
Amazing how much abuse those thin disks will take!

I've never had a skinny cheap ebay cut off wheel burst. Nor any other angle grinder disc.
The only disaster I had was using a car boot sale wire cup wheel burst, but looking at it after it said "Max rpm 8000" and my angle grinder did 12,000.
Or some similar figures, it was many years ago.

Not because of exploding discs - used em for years for cutting/grinding and never had one explode on me - but cos I've got arms like pipe cleaners so struggle with owt heavy. Bought a knotted cup brush for it recently and found that really hard to control as it's out of balance so gives the grinder a mind of it's own. Wasn't confident with it so went straight on the scrap pile... gunna try a poly disc instead.

Try a pipeliner brush. It’s like a radial knotted brush if that makes sense? Klingspor make them and it’s the only Abracs product I’ll buy. I use them when arc welding as I’m too idle to use a manual brush.

I’ve started using them to de dross plasma cutting etc as they’re better balanced than a cup one.

I have no idea why people use grinders without a guard. Absolutely stupid.

Only had one slitting disk burst. Face like a porcupine but I had glasses on so all was well. I don’t think it’s that common. That was one out of thousands. Literally. I buy them in multiples of 100! Probably my stupidity and it got nipped.

The only ones I refuse to use is ones that have got wet. Like soaked. I have seen them grenade. There’s far worse tools to be worried of but if you don’t use one regularly then I can see why it’s a bit nerve inducing

Yes but he’s right about the discs though? I don’t think there is any possibility of a bit of broken disc going through a pair of safety spec, one it’s not round so isn’t going to be rotating in a circular fashion, it’s just going to bounce off?

Just watched this. I love this chaps channel.
He tried smaller grinders before but this time it is a 9" proper thick grinding disk. Spun up to silly rpm so it bursts.
Really nasty - that watermelon could be you! Mind you at normal rpm it won't be as bad but even so

I've been watching Bitchin' Rides, aka Kindig Customs, on Discovery. Good show - lots on metalwork techniques and very little manufactured drama/fake disasters. But .... they weld with no gloves on, they grind with no gloves/glasses/guard on. Not all the time, but enough to make you worry a bit.

A few years ago a poster on here put a couple of photos up. One was a guy's face after he got kick back from a 9" grinder. There was a gaping wound that ran from under his eye, down his nose and through his lip. Miraculously it hadn't smashed his teeth. The second photo was of the stitched, healing wound. It was just a long, thin pink line, not half as bad as you would expect.

I never forgot that first picture. It really made me think about safety. Does anyone else remember it?

I’ve done it when needs must. The trick is to remember to put it back. Those thin discs take no prisoners

Been welding without gloves for years. Also grinding.
When we were in school aged 15 or so we were allowed to use a 9 inch grinder to cut galve scaffolding box -the stuff that slots together at the end - pretty this wall stuff. When that grinding disc dug in, lost a chunk, the vibration was frightening. Grow up or **** out I guess.

Yes it was horrific.
I tend not to use grinding disks any more - just thin cutting disks and sanding wheels.
