angle grinder help.

Hi guys im new here. I bought a cebora welder a little while ago to do some welding on cars. my welds are pretty crap at the moment but im slowly getting better

ive been using a clarke angle grinder on and off for about 2-3 years and it decided it doesnt want to play ball anymore. its making a horrible noise and vibrating a lot. so now i need to buy a new one but im unsure of what to go for. are the bosch ones any good?

oh and which are the most abrasive grinding discs? i hate sitting there for ages grinding my welds down.

I think everyone has their own theories on grinders.
Personally I have found whatever brand I buy they don't last as long as I would like, so I tend to buy cheap ones (sub £15) and treat them as disposable. It also means I can have two three hanging about with different discs on, usually one with a cutting disc, one with a grinding disc and one with a wire cup brush. Cuts down on disc changing and works for me.

Not sure what are the most abrasive grinding discs are though, sorry.

Most abrasive grinding discs are a 36 grit soft pad on a backing. These chew through welds very quickly! Grinding smooth in no time.

I ve found hitachi and bosch to be the best.Im using both the hitachi and bosch for the last five years,only had to change the leads.

As already mentioned you get what you pay for BUT even the cheap ones are excellent value,usually last quite a long time for just a few quid,The grinders I prefer have a smaller diameter body,much more comfortable to hold for extended periods.One of my cheepo's I bought from "Aldi" a few years ago has had loads of use and still refuses to die and all for the princely sum of about £7-50 but after a few minutes using it one handed on the thicker body my fingers are going into cramp.

i swear by b&q's el-cheapo ones last one cost me £15 ish and iv had it 2 years so far and i use it 3-4 times a week also im not that kind to them,, when i ran my garage i used to go through a grinder every 6-12 months regardless of maker,, so stopped buying good ones,, a little tip tho if you want one to last blow it out with an air line at the end of the working day,,,

blowing out with an airline can damage them it can be like shotblasting the enamel from the coils dpending what substance you are blowing out

I have 3 Makita angle grinders and a DeWalt that i bought in the late 80's, all still work perfectly.

I prefer flap discs for taking out welds

Im in the sub £15 grinders range. Mine has just given up the will to live BUT I have abused it for about two years, my one befor that was even cheaper and that lasted about three years. I have used the older Bosh grinders and I dont know anyone who has had one break down, they do feal alot better, less vibes ets but for occasional use and abuse then for me its the cheaper range.

For this one its a personal choice, what will suit your needs.

Have worked for 3 different engineering companys and they all use bosch grinders,they are very reliable and put up with alot of the abuse i give themThe guards are easy to turn to get into those akward areas.
Have never had to buy my own so cant tell you how they measure up price wise.
As langy states a good 40 grit flap disc will take most welds off and give a better finish.

I've owned 2 grinders in the last 5 years, first was a B&Q el-cheapo, and a friend killed that one for me, and bought me a JCB one which I have today. Handy blow-mould case which keeps it tidy in the back of the landie.

ive had bosch hitachi and an el cheapo the el cheapo died in no time at all so off i went for another bosch would never buy another cheap one becasue the always die when the shops are shut which annoys me more then the grinder dying.
i also think that griders often die because the operator rather then letting the disc do its job tries to force the grinder to do the job faster by applying to much pressure

as said above peope think press harder and it will cut quicker not the case .the slower the surface speed of disk the quicker the wear and the slower the cut . theres more overload on motor increasing the amperage . it warms up quicker . shorter life .

a friend put a 9" grinder through his wrist, he were in stoke manderville for weeks!!

i have a bosch grinder, had it for about ten year would,nt by out else other than boshc.
but thats me.

i dont force my grinder as it just eats through discs quicker. it was a pretty cheap one tbh and i think it just had enough and something inside decided to give way.

hmm the new grinder seems to be vibrating quite a bit, to the point where my hand gets cramp. maybe its because im using the grinding wheel? should it do this or is there something wrong with it?
