so we decided to treat ourselves to a new TV, our old TV was a 60 inch sony SXRD rear projection monster which we had a PC connected to to stream stuff, mainly UK stuff so the boss can keep up with her soaps. I picked this TV up for free off gumtree not long after moving to Australia as a non runner, fixed it and its done us proud for 7 years but as its old tech 'er indoors wanted something more up to date.
so we got a brand spanking 4k 65 inch TCL android TV, but I'm really not impressed with it at all.
for a start they are a fragile thing, I turned up in the wifes XC60 and was told it voids the warranty if it is transported laid flat as the screen will likely crack?? so home I went and went back with my ute which has virtually no suspension with no weight in it but I got it home, upright and without damage.
so, got it turned on and I just don't think the picture is as good as the SXRD. its brighter and the HD channels look pretty good but the picture quality on the old TV seemed a lot more natural to me whereas the new one seems more like I'm watching a digital version of an image if that makes sense.
its not that it isn't clear it just doesn't look as natural.
the android bit is garbage, I was expecting something similar to phones but therein seems to lie the problem, apps for phones rely on the ability to touch the screen so apps for the TV have to be specifically for the TV, which limits it badly. You can 'sideload' apps onto it but then its guess where the pointer would be or it displays sideways as it would on a phone.
basically we'll still be using a PC connected to it to do what we would have expected to be done on the TV.
does anyone else think that TV's went backwards badly in the pursuit of being thin and light and all this modern jargon and tech is just trying to get back to picture quality we already had years ago in big and heavy sets? and if they're going to include a computer in the TV it shouldn't be some half done attempt?
