I do a bit of voluntary woodland management locally and we dig up various hardware most of which we can identify. This, however, stumped us. Have no fear says I, there is a forum of mighty brains who are bound to know what it is.

That looks like a regulated drip feed oiler of some kind.

it's a 300mm/12 " yellow rule !!! sorry m8 couldn't resist that one,I'm as curious as you,from here it looks like it's some kind of sight feed lubricator with a spring loaded wheel at the top to control the flow to the bottom outlet.[but I could be miles away] I'll watch with anticipation.

Something slow and elderly - big old single or two cyl diesel, gas engine or steam (?)

Well, it's nickel plated which suggests it's very old, doesn't look like it's a vehicle type from what I've seen of them, any machine it would have been used on would also have to old as most machinery from the last 50 years or so has tended to use sealed or permanently lubricated bearings. I reckon it's off some old stationary engine.

There is probably someone somewhere restoring a vintage bit of machinery and is searching for that exact part.

Never mind. I would suggest that the regulated feed screw would be a method of negating the vibration of the machine itself. A locking nut would be fine for a machine not inducing a great level of vibration and/or needing little adjustment.

Still looks in good condition considering its' woodland retreat.
