I had to replace the 2nd synchro on a Simca gearbox. Got a secondhand gearbox and took out the synchro and decided to use the main shaft too as it looked in better nick. Put it all back and found no drive. Ah, clutch has gone over centre. Took it all out, checked clutch, nothing wrong. Put it all back, no drive. Took the box out again and caught a look at the old main shaft spline on the bench. AArrrgHHHH!!!!. The one I'd decided to use was thinner and didn't engage in the clutch splines. Strip gearbox AGAIN and refit old main shaft. I thought I'd been lucky getting the box back in with the new shaft, without an alignment tool!
I'm guilty of doing stuff like that or adding a couple of extra bolts to the pile of bits to go back on
Now here's one I've done more than once.....
Wake up, look at the alarm clock, oh sh-t I forgot to set it and I'm late for work, rush to make breakfast + clean my teeth + get dressed + run out the door all at the same time only for the missus to point out it's SUNDAY

Regular one for me is changing plugs on a temp supply to a different plug, say four pin to a five pin and I forget to put the plug cover on or whe making off an armoured cable gland I forget to place the gland backnut on first or even a cable shroud!
Remember the rubberlite 13a plugs & trailing sockets, the ones you had to thread the cable through the cover before wiring them? Most of the ones I wired ended up with cuts in the cover because I forgot to fit them first.
In a previous job I replaced 3 phase plugs & leads fairly regularly & quite often I would forget to fit the cover first. Not good when you have 20 people waiting to start work on the production line & a line supervisor breathing down your neck!
Mind you it was usually their fault - they used to grab the cable & pull to unplug things instead of pulling on the plug!

I'm going to nominate the 'Richard head' I have to work with. He welded the gate latch holder on the wrong gate............and couldn't see what was wrong. He had 3 mistakes on these simple gates, a massive argument ensued and a meeting with the boss......

Last week I fitted a new starter motor to my car, bolts (as always) awkward to get to, had to take the battery tray out etc etc. Accidentally removed a bolt that I didn't need to (looked like it was in the right place for the starter..) chucked it in my magnetic tray and carried on. Put it all back together and tried the starter , All good! Lifted the magnetic tray off the wing to see a bolt stuck to the bottom, thinks to meself 'now where the bloody hell has that come from?' After half an hour of head scratching and nosing about in the engine bay I realised where it went.... back out with the battery tray et al just to put back one bolt, many curse words were uttered!!!
On a peugeot BE gearbox there is a conveniently placed bolt head on the outside of the casing that the unwary could loosen by mistake. Unfortunately it secures the reverse idler shaft & if you remove the bolt the shaft can fall into the box meaning a gearbox strip-down!

Reminds me of the guy I worked with who would drill holes for the self drilling screws and then drive them in... then blame me for slowing him down.

Monday I had a hectic day which resembled a 60 minute makeover. The builder asked me to cut 2 central heating pipes to the boiler in the garage that needed re routing as they were in the way of the rsj location. Id cut them off and the builders boss turned up and said can you reconnect them in a bit as we’ve arrived to help the other 2 lift in the steel.
Long story short I reconnected them up, finished the rad piping and filled the system back up. I was there till 10.30 trying everything to get the boiler to stay lit, in the end the customer told me to go home and look in the morning. 100m from my house it clicked what I’d done...
Reversed the flow and return!
Every day is a school day folks. I’ll stick to kitchens and bathrooms

a neighbour back in the late 70s early 80s had bought a brand new , large at that time , being 100hp ford tractor straight from basildon through the local dealer . many years had passed and the tractor had given countless years of sterling service , as fords were prone to porus blocks this one was no exception ,so eventualy it had to be rebuilt as it had been a good servant and had never thrown up any problems that couldnt be fixed in 30mns. The local workshop took it in ,got the new block ordered etc. when the mechanics split the tractor the heard a "CLONK" but nowt seemed wrong , onto engine stand ready to be stripped down , when the sump came to be removed the CLONK showed its face much to the amusement of the workshop staff. low and behold a large adjustable spanner had been in the sump from new.this tractor had been worked hard for at least 15 years !
