i've had molten metal in the corner of my eye while using a full face mask arc welding, and have the scars to prove it. very unpleasant, wouldn't tack with out a mask if i were you get a light on your work if you need it, or a light on your helmet even! the better helmets also go lighter than the cheapo ones in my experience, that includes 9002d speedglas to 9100xx, huge difference, you can actually set bits up to weld with the 9100xx down!

I have put one of those 'head lamp' things you see advertised for running/walking/rambling at night on my helmet before, worked a treat

nice, esab make a specifically designed clip-on one too i've always just tried to have enough light around when i'm working, i think it's just nicer and saver to work in a well lit place

Its preferable yea, better to look twice and weld once, spend the time on prep rather than melting metal
