Just started laying some welds with my new Butters outfit and First few welds were pretty good. After a little time it started to leave alot of dusty orange stuff on the metal.
Gas flow or maybe your torch angle is wrong so the gas isn't fully shielding the weld.
Are you welding indoors or outdoors and what flow rate have you got your reg set at? Somewhere around 10-12 lpm is a good starting point.
turned it up to between 10 - 12 now. still leaves a brown layer over the weld. but I can wire brush is off. this was with pulling the torch and then i tried pushing the torch and there was alot less brown stuff
I'd imagine it's probably down to your torch angle, try experimenting with different angles and see what effect it has.
Just out of interest, why are you pulling the torch? Most mig welding is done with a push technique, it gives a flatter weld with less spatter but at the expense of a tiny bit of penetration.
Looking at Malcolm's pic, how does your torch angle compare?
i realise that I should push, but felt more comfortable starting with pulling, I pulled with the torch at the angle of the picture, then i tried pushing the same as illustrated in the picture and got a far better weld.
Welds are looking ok Tom, if I was to be slightly critical I'd say the one to the left looks a little 'cold', the edge doesn't seem to have fused properly in places but other than that they look ok. Up your power a tad and that should sort out the lack of fusion.
Nice present btw, someone was very generous!
it is a tad rusty, but I cleaned up the bits that I intended to weld and cleaned up a patch for my earth.
Can anyone Advise me as to If my wire speed seems to be ok? Was a little spattery but not too bad. Was definately better pushing the torch, Will take a pic of the pushed weld and will let you guys evaluate it
