AN hose fittings?

I've got a pre-filter here that I need to add an 8mm ID nylon pneumatic hose to.

The filter has a selection of AN male fitting that came with it, that I *think* are M22 x 1.5.

The hose is low pressure (actually slightly less than atmospheric as the pump is upstream).

It seems a good idea not to just fit an M22 hosetail (assuming they even exist) as demounting (for cleaning) would require rotation. So it seems that the AN fittings are probably a good idea.

...but I have no experience of them.

I see places selling the female fittings with hose, but, if I just want to use my own hose, is that simple enough?

(I ask as one of the retailers was quite specific that you had to buy x hose for their x fittings and y hose for their y fittings - so it didn't seem as simple as I'd hoped?)

This is a diesel pre filter, placed before an electric pump.

I’m not sure what you’re actually asking here? If it’s can you use any old hose with AN fittings, then no , not usually. AN have a -number which refers to the size in 16th of an inch, ie -8an is half inch bore. An fittings are standardised to work with AN hose

If the hose tail is the correct size for the hose, then that is all that matters.
However, AN is a specific thread size/type, and would require an adapter from metric.

You'll likely be able to get two part hose tails in the correct size, however I'm not entirely sure what you'd need to search for to find them.

I would go for nipples in each port with dowties and then use a hydraulic hose tail onto them for the connection, that would make taking it off a breeze.

Im not at all familiar with hydraulic fittings. Im unsure about the middle bit. It says M22 to 1/2 bsp, so im assuming thats about right.

But... ive not instantly been able to find a 1/2 bsp to 8mm tail for the last fitting, and i reckon that may be the hard bit?

Yeah, it was "can i use any old hose" - but, more specifically, 8mm bore nylon air hose.

Id have thought so. Im never certain how they work out barbs. I mean, if somthing is listed as a 5/16 does that mean its to match 5/16 ID hose (so the major diameter of the barb is some amount greater) or does it mean that the major diameter of the barb is 5/16 (7.9375mm) - in which case, i doubt it would seal properly.

I’ve always assumed (a bit dangerous I know but you only live once) they fit the stated I’d of the hose.
I can probably check Monday but someone will probably know for certain.

Im about to buy some stuff from ali express, so i reckon ill just buy some random ones, find theyre the wrong size, begrudge the £1.80, and then store them until the end of time as "they might come in useful"

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do but most of the thread parts of AN fittings are compatible* (*maybe don't use for aircraft*) with jic/npt fittings.

None of them are metric so won't be m22..

The bit that varies is the end that connects to the hose (ie nitrile hose, stainless overbraid, nylon overbraid etc. Hence the retailers making things sound complicated.

If you just want a hose tail to secure the hose with a clamp then it's fairly simple.
Each -# equals 1/16 of an inch
So -2 is 2/16" also known as 1/8"
-3 is 3/16"
-4 is 4/16 also known as 1/4"

A flared npt hose tail in the corresponding size.will be fine for most applications (ie, I'd trust my life on it. Maybe not someone elses!)

I purchased a 6AN (male) to 5/16 tail, and a 6AN Female-Female coupler.

Its a whole stack of potential leak points, but, on paper, it should work!

Yes. Well, probably...

The landrover 300tdi (and probably loads of other cars) uses nylon (I assume) fuel pipe.

On my 101 forward control, I have used clear nylon pneumatic pipe. Clear, so as I can see any issues with air ingress etc.

Stock setup on diesel military landrovers is -

Tank
Sedimenter
Lift pump
Filter
Injection pump


My issue is that the engine I have in the 101 has non standard lift pumps which are not the most reliable. So I have a little electric faucet pump. Which works nicely.

But it should really have a mesh pre filter.



All the other fuel fittings on the 101 are with the nylon pipe and have been for years now. They're all either hose tails or compression fittings, with brass inserts.



As this pre filter came with AN male fittings, I was wondering if I could just use the same hose in one of the AN female ones, but it seems that is more complicated, hence getting the 5/16 tail.

If its something you would go for, you can tweak the fittings to suit your pipe/bore etc and they are cheaper elsewhere if you spend time to dig.
I've never seen pushfit to AN fittings direct, but probably somewhere in the darkest corner of the internet they exist.
I bought a similar inline dismountable filter for a bike project and the fine body threads galled the 2nd time they were undone, just a heads up, coat the threads with antiseize or something maybe.

Ah now I get you. I’d be tempted to plumb it with -6AN right the way through. My defender is done in exactly the same stuff

Think Automotive for hose and fittings but the online catalogue is a bit restrictive, you need the paper one and even that doesn't show everything they do.

FSE Glencoe for fuel system components, online catalogue is good as is their service.
