Yup...I reckon if you are renting in London to make a good life here (settle with family etc) then you need a good wage otherwise it's a miserable place.London seems like a hard place to live if not making a decent wage, especially with how things are at the moment.
Could you stick bays in with 2 or 4 post lifts and rent them out for the day ?
Just bouncing ideas around.

The bottom line of this is bang on. We now make a living off a small farm with two holiday cottages, by in effect selling a 5 minute window into living the dream. But to buy the dream I prostituted my self across the world in many toilet locations for many years. So I, primarily, make interface panels for electronic musical instruments. So relatively niche.
Those skills could be transfered, I suspect, to yacht dashboards (ive done at least one before) or camper van stuff, or, probably, all sorts of other things.
But I don't "know" those areas. So how do you get "in" when you don't know the sector at all?
You could be the most amazing tig welder but, without knowing, I don't know, racing cars, how are you going to start selling custom manifolds? You could make them but that's not the same as knowing what to make or who to sell it to.
Selling is as much of a skill as making half the time. So, dull as it is, you need to work out what to sell (and especially who to sell it to) and then, maybe, how to make it, rather than the other way around.
I figure that selling some sort of object, to males, that gives marginal gains in whatever they're into is the way to earn. Be it fancy hifi cables, golf kit, high end car stuff, sex toys, whatever. Something where they will pay more than it's worth to give them an "edge".
My partner has training as a costume designer. She has never taken me up on the suggestion but I reckon her way to make proper money would be high end custom adult clothing. The sort of thing a man will buy and get his partner to wear in private.
Basically separate men from their money but offering them some sort of dream.
I like living up here, what we have and our standard of living you'd need to be earning serious money to get that living in London.Don't get me wrong...I'm making a very decent wage.. its just that I don't see the value in living here is all..
The general fakery of the place doesn't work for me..and I wonder if I might be better off working elsewhere, albeit for less money, ut happier.
This is really true, or "furry" costumes. But as you say, it is getting into or creating the market that is the trick. She has never taken me up on the suggestion but I reckon her way to make proper money would be high end custom adult clothing. I don't know any experienced IT guys that haven't almost completely lost the will to live. I come across loads that have done career changes. It is the nature of it.
There is a subtle difference between the two and only experiencing them will show you which you prefer. " Live to work or work to live"Well... given my experience in IT. I think I am good at that.
But going forward I think I may he "proficient" in other skills to carry out basic jobs on a per assessment basis.
Hmm... I'm sure I won't be the only person confused by this.. isn't "life" and "living" largely the same thing.
What are you trying to do ? You will soon have hoards of southerners pushing the prices of everything out of the reach of the locals and will end up as badly off as before . find a piece of heaven and keep quiet just enjoy .I like living up here, what we have and our standard of living you'd need to be earning serious money to get that living in London.
A mate and his girlfriend from England moved up here and borrowed our cottage on the coast north west of Aberdeen. They loved it up here and travelled around Scotland looking for their dream area. They just bought their dream property west of Portsoy over looking Sandend beach on the cliffs. House, holiday rental cottage, huge farm barn, 40m long stone steading, ruin steading and 3 1/2 acres for £330k. Probably the cost of a tiny flat in London. They love the beauty of the coastline, the easy pace of life, no traffic and never stop talking about how friendly everyone is. They'd been talking about doing this for years and finally did it and it's changed their lives.
A lot of folk love the London lifestyle but it wouldn't be for me.
Attached some pics from the first week when we were there helping clear things out, the place was left in a mess and we got to know the guys at the tip quite well.
Folk up here are super friendly. Life is what you make it. Look for that green grass and when you find it realise you've found it.

Most English refuse to move north of the border. I think Aberdeenshire and Moray offer really good value for money at the moment, especially Aberdeenshire as unlike a lot of other places in Scotland the property prices haven't been pushed up due to influx of tourists etc. What are you trying to do ? I couldn't agree more...and I live here!London.....nahhhhhh
I agree with this, more than half of the people living here are poor scratching a living where they can the others are rich and have no fxxxxxx clue about how hard it is including the berks in power making it worse for everyone!Don't get me wrong...I'm making a very decent wage.. its just that I don't see the value in living here is all..

Old houses always need work. But have something about them Id not seen til I bought one, its like you dont own it, only its keeper till the next one.Eighteen years ago I convinced my better half to move into a fifteenth century house. It has been a non-stop labour of love. Every single day she reminds me of how awful the place is to live in and almost had me convinced she meant it. (I love the place and consider myself extremely fortunate to live here) and, as she is a city girl, has plans to sell up and move into a place that doesn't need seven days a week maintenance (which is slowly getting out of reach for me) So she has been looking at houses. I was therefore stunned to be shown her latest "find". A farmhouse in Dumfries!
She has really taken to this "living out of sight of most". We are hidden away and without directions you are unlikely to find us, I like it, she has grown to like it. By and large we live a very simple life with no real ambitions to go anywhere or do anything as we are perfectly happy with each others company and if our world ended at the gate that would suit us just fine.
Value begins as you get to the too far for an easy daily commute to Aberdeen. I was very wary of buying over the line when Nicola was in power, not as sure its such a problem now!But only time will tell. Most English refuse to move north of the border. I think Aberdeenshire and Moray offer really good value for money at the moment, especially Aberdeenshire as unlike a lot of other places in Scotland the property prices haven't been pushed up due to influx of tourists etc.
