An acceptable standard of work

Had a job come in that involves replacement of a tar tanker heater chimney. No big deal I have done a few and built them. I put an order in the some 3 inch threaded steel pipe and a 45 bend.
Sat around for a while they sorted my order. This is what I was given. As you can imagine there was a lot of words I used I can't mention here . I played up absolutely terrible and chucked £30 pound at them and I left. They can't understand what my problem is.

Meh. Not great but it's black iron pipe. difficult to cut threads that size (it's really gummy) and it will do the job. It's not so much a fastener as a fixture, I believe the idea is you fit it up, it doesn't leak, job done...

It's disgusting mate. I use this stuff a lot .and bigger diameters to. Yes they screw together and get welded in situ. But that isn't what I would call acceptable

I have thought about it to be honest. If I get more of them then it would be a worthy investment

Totally unacceptable, surely if it was threaded on a threading machine they should have cut the pipe square with the pipe cutter and chamfered the inside end, looks like it’s been threaded dry and chewed the threads, you’d be better welding a half nipple on as using that rubbish...

Pretty rough job there. Looks like the teeth on one or more of the dies isn't in the greatest condition. Could also be they weren't set right either.

the thing is they use a ratchet die on them that only goes forward so all the swarf gets clogged in the threads that's been cut when you finaly reverse it for a decentclean thread its best to do 2 turns forward and one back that clears the swarf out without damage to the thread and use good cutting compound . when I was an apprentice had to thread tons of steel conduit

Used to always take two cuts with the ridgid threading machine, would hold the lever half way to take a first cut then take a full cut to finish with, golden dies we’re the doggies doo da’s...

That's how I was taught as an apprentice, the old 1½" conduit used to give the arm muscles a workout

I have welded it and problem solved. It was there attitude towards it. Standing there and saying to me that they can't understand why I got the major hump. Never mind rant over and onwards

We had a pipe threader at a place I used to work, it come in a metal box and dies were 1/2” to 2”, it clamped to the pipe and was powered with an Allan key in the drill, from memory it had two drives (slow and fast or forwards/backwards), we never used it that often but it was handy, it was 25 years ago and I can’t remember who made it but it wasn’t ridgig or rothenberger, anyone got any ideas?

Poor quality dies or something. Looks like the pipe hasn't been cut straight or faced.

I'd look for a nice used machine.

Definitely wasn’t a Ridgid or Rothenberger, it was alloy bodied, rectangular in shape, I’m sure you tightened a knurled nut to feed the dies onto the pipe and once the dies got a grip it fed itself on, probably made around about or after the war, unfortunately the place closed down 4 years ago after being on the go for 120 years...

It does not help Spencer but I am pleased you say that it is nasty gummy stuff, make me feel better about the mess I made trying to turn an iron barrel over the weekend, not nice.
