Not so sure as many about buying a mig for farm work unless your actually fabricating your own kit
So many young guys on farms think them a must but mig creates as many issues as it solves on a farm unless like I say your into fabricating a fair bit and have all the cutting and drilling gear etc and a workshop
Stick is still the go to tool on the farm especially on 4 mm up

appreciate your comment chap... i did a bit of research before i purchased this.... i know for my outside work, working with rusty steel, or something that needs to be essentually strong i will have to keep with stick, i bought the mig because were got a lot of new gates need making and feed troughs etc.. for these i will be buying all new steal, (try and support our steel works a bit this winter), the work will be carried out in our workshop so the mig will be sheilded from the wind and go a treat i hope..... im hoping for speed...
im sure we dont have everything but we have pillar drills, bansaws etc to do our kind of work....
you think the welder above with everything appart from the gas was a good buy? £800.....

Seems reasonable to me price wise. But making farm stuff out of steel yourselves, itll be a bitch to stop the rust unless you send it out for galvanising.
I bought some hurdles for our stock the other day, not the best quality, made from galvanised steel then welded, instead of welded then galvanised. But i couldnt buy the steel for what they cost delivered.

I haven't got any quotes yet for the steel, but looking at the news lately I can't think it will be that expensive atm....
As for what we make, I'll try and remember to take some pics tomorrow to show you what we do...
As for the galvanising, it seems rubbish now a days...
We have gates etc that my grandad made over 40 years ago that are still going strong... I admit the bottom rails that have sat in manuor have rotted out and had new welded back in. But that's the beauty of it,.....old, old galv gates used to be pretty good but at a price, today's stuff is cheap enough, but the galv and the thickness of steel they produce it from are rubbish... All bought stuff seems to get bent/broken easily by cattle, Rotts away three times as fast, and if I try and make a repair to it, it never welds or goes well...
Usually have to grind the galv away to get it to weld, then burn holes through it because theirs only about a mil of steel left...
Long term everything home made is well worth making, downside is it's very heavy, require teleporters to move around and time consuming to paint...
Saying that we can't make everything, there isn't always time, so pre made galv gates, troughs etc are bought...
I genuinely wouldn't have a clue where there is anybody local... I live a bit in the sticks between a town called Louth and mablethorpe in Lincolnshire... If you or anybody knows of anywhere, please let me know... It would be worth a quote... I'll be paying somebody £10 an hour to paint two coats, and it's never done enthusiastically lol....

Maybe for fixing the gates and such made of 1mm you should have bought a portamig with the 15 amp minimum.

For actually making stuff it should increase speed as long as it's not just one at a time

I make farm gates from40x10 with 16 mm solid bar and welded cross braces in same 40x10 galvanised after production. About four or five times the cost but last almost indefinitely and actually work

That's another design of home made trough... As u can see we spent a few more pennies on them and bought galv to line the trough, but it hasn't lasted 4 years and it's nearly rusted through, either the cattle lick it off or silage effulent doesn't agree with galv
Thankyou for the observation on the aniamls.... Touch wood everything is in good health atm, its been nice fresh weather for them...
i wasnt going crazy then! lol., i thought the galv rubbed off... the old stuff seems to last but what weve bought in the last ten years just rubs off in a matter of days... nothing in agriculture seems to be made like it used to be..
not for everything, but the things im looking at making, i agree... just make it strong and heavy enough to last, the way farming is going men wont be able to carry gates soon so it doesnt matter if a forlift is needed to move what we make...
obviously i havnt time to make everything on the job, but what i can i try to...
cheers chap, kind of gone off subject a little, glad to have a comment that id got a decent buy... i hadnt had much reasurance....
im hoping the torch will be ok.... the welder is a 315amp, but i only aim to be using it around 180-220amp with a decent continuous cycle.... ill whip the stick out if i require a bigger amp weld... i cant remember brands, but i had a choice of three brands, each two different sizes... i went for this parker one because it had a nice grip and angle to it for me... also the cable at the back of the torch was a lot more flexable than the others.... between the two sizes there was 250 and 350 i think.... they told me i would be ok to do the occasional higher amp small weld witht the 250 torch, but i dont think that will happen.... for the majority im hoping it will be fine, if it is a problem, please say and ill get a seperate bigger one...
