Aluminium Smell

Noticed tonight when cleaning a aluminium plate with a scotch bright pad and also when filling it, it gives off a strong smell. To me it smells like garlic. Can anyone report the same experience and do any metals actually smell or smell different to each other. I’m prepared to believe it’s madness on my part!

Can you smell what size holes you're drilling?

Yes I can but never given it a thought.
@8ob not sure about gaztube vids I personally think if you last here more than 3 weeks you definitely have a strange outlook on life

Which alloy is it? Never thought of aluminium as smelling of garlic, but alloying elements might be responsible.

No idea on the exact composition just some 6mm sheet I found. But noticed the smell lots of times in past but never stopped to ask what it is. Could it be some form of oxide forming as the surface is cleaned

Probably used extra virgin olive oil as loob....

i used too work in a casting shop doing recycled aluminium, it did all smell weird at the best of times, sometimes it was just awful, but the coffee pods and the pizza trays were ok

In the case of the garlic smell of aluminium, perhaps it might be parosmia - an altered sense of smell, typically seen as a consequence of COVID infection, or head injury. If you can smell it on aluminium, but others can't, it might be worth getting yourself checked out at the docs.

It not a recent thing I have always thought Aluminium smells bad when cutting into it. Thinking about it further it may be sulphur as it not dissimilar and is added to castings.

I can tell when a soldering iron is up to temp by the smell.

It'll be an Oxide or ozone.

It's ozone when you're welding it. not good for you by all accounts but then nothing has been since they carried out all the nuclear testing so hey ho.

I guess there is a very faint smell from aluminium when sanding it etc yes. An almost coppery smell IMO.

I used to have a poor sense of smell. But perhaps after having the Covid twice I do appear to have heightened smell now oddly. The worst thing is that now in shops etc I can smell body oddor of others pretty bad! I used to smell hardly anything but now hold my breath when passing people.

My GF has a serious sense of smell. Like insane level. One example off top of my head was I had a cup of coke in living room as no glasses left. She walked into room some 12+ feet away and asked had I Coke in the cup as she can smell coke really strong.

I am not surprised, a line of the stuff makes your eyes water, that would explain away the Mercs
