It builds up a base of folks who as their careers progress may well want to buy a good cad package or recommend one to their company. Think of it like scattering ground bait

That’s why they give them to colleges and universities … and some only on technical courses… engineering architecture etc.

It does nothing for their profits. I would not buy it anyway...

but missing some really, really important features from the free version (for example, STEP export so you have the option of opening your models in anything other than DesignSpark Mechanical). Avoid DesignSpark Mechanical like the plague in my opinion.
