Alternative Sound Deadening Material

I need to put some sound deadening in the Pick Up. And wondered if Flash Banding would do the job at a fraction of the cost.

After a quick search it seems I'm not the first to have this thought. The only downside it can fall off walls and the roof, of not fitted correctly.

So is it a good idea? And if not why not?

I used closed cell foam in the V8 series pickup I have, just stick anything up with some good adhesive and you're sorted

I used flashband on the doors of my beetle,still on 3 or 4 years later.Seems to make the panel more solid.

Carpet on the floors would go a long way if you don't have them - something to help absorb noise. Not a big fan of damping pads. That can do a bit on older vehicles but doesn't tend to be cost or weight efficient. Worth trying roofing felt or whatever instead of damping if it can be easily removed - should add mass which would help.

I use the Tecsound 50, it's is very dense and better than mass loaded vinyl the company told me and at a fraction of the cost of the automotive branded stuff which is not as dense or as good http://www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk/tecsound-acoustic-membrane.htm

There's self sticking which sticks very well, alu sided and plain non stick to choose from.

Cover 25% of the area of large panels and 100% of wheel arches with the tecsound, then isolate with a closed cell foam http://www.needlesports.com/Catalog...nderlay-15m-wide-by-per-metre-length-BEA-TULM or Felt http://www.automobiletrim.com/sound-proofing.html then 100% coverage with the Tecsound over top or rubber matting if that is what you have. I carpet over the Tecsound and it all makes a significant difference.

A little post I did once before on another forum: I haven’t been able to find out what the density of Dynamat is but the tecsound 50 range is 5kg/m2, bitumen based products are between 1kg/m² and 2kg/m² and this 3M product http://3mcollision.com/3m-sound-deadening-pads-08840.html is 3kg/m2 so effectively you need less to dampen the panels. A price comparison for the dampening material without carriage is: Dynamat £44/m2, Automobiltrim’s sound damping pads £31.2/m2, Tecsound SY50 £10.50/m2 and considering you need less of the Tecsound SY50-ALU it seems like the obvious choice.

I stone chipped the inside of a van I had. Used a schutz gun and got the stone chip in those kinda cans. Did about 5 coats and it made a HUGE difference to the road noise within the van.
And made it look new in the back
