alterative to parafin for parts bath

Hi Guys
I have been using parafin up to now in my parts bath.
I havent found it much of a problem,
I like the way it cleans.
but trying to be more safty contious, I am looking for other options.
NOT to keen on water basied cleaners, only as I clean steel in the way of some car parts,
dont want the added hassel of rust starting if its not been air dryed properly.

Um...surely a different name for the same thing? Paraffin being British and kerosene being American? If I'm not mistaken (I often am), you can buy parts washing fluid, does the same job, unless you want to recycle it as firefighters.

Safety Kleen do some good stuff for washers.
I've always thought that kerosene is paraffin ???

The lorry yard I used to help at used to buy Kerosene in 45 gallon drums for parts cleaning and it is clear whereas paraffin is usually coloured to differentiate between the two. Paraffin is a more refined version of Kerosene for burning in heaters and Kerosene is used as aviation fuel for jet engines. It's like thin diesel ( not Vin Diesel ).

As far as I know, the fumes aren't toxic in any way or form? The only way I thought they could affect people is if they happen to become sensitised to the fumes through prolonged exposure, along the same lines as gum turpentine etc.? Some do, some don't.

we always uaed a mix of kerosene and diesel, you could place the parts on the bench to airdry and the diesel would leave a fine oil coating on it that prevented rust forming

Shame you don't want to use water based as limonene is one hell of a cleaner

Perhaps the best way to understand this is in the "seconds" rating used with heating oils. Paraffin is less volatile than kerosene, which in turn is less volatile than heating oil etc. Just ask a tractor enthusiast, a TVO tractor may run on paraffin, but nowhere near as well as kerosene.
No one has mentioned the off the shelf degreasing fluids designed to be washed off with water, one of which is "hyperclean", good stuff. Its the disposal thats the problem.

In the UK, kerosene is also known as paraffin and home heating oil.

We have just changed at work from Safety Kleen solvent to Safety Kleen water soluble in a heated tank ,have to say the new tank works well but requires topping up with water quite regularly..and needs a heating element left on etc ...is jizer still available?....I've heard of heating oil,diesel and paraffin being used in various mixes being very good too ..

Paraffin and Kerosene are the same thing, just like petrol and gasoline are the same thing. Simply different names in different countries.

However - if it's sold as a fuel it's taxed differently to if it's sold as a cleaning solvent. Hence the dye being added to make it easy to tell if tax has been paid.

Here parafin is what you make candles out of. Hence the term Kerosene

I've used Gunk HydroSeal, nasty stuff that would turn your skin black. No longer available as it was so nasty, but it worked.

They have a new version supposedly not so toxic. Still about $28/gallon.

Interested in what other use.
