Almost self-immolated myself today

Merrily grinding away, sparks hitting my overalls, my leg started to get a bit warm... I look down and i'm on fire. Cue grinder rapidly goes down and I start hopping about like a madman trying to pat out the fire. A clean hole in my overalls and a burn mark on my trackies is the result. Lucky it wasn't worse.

Seriously if I've the sensible hat on then Dickies overalls with the legs outside the riggers. Gloves and a Bionic face shield.

Wife moans like Hell when I grind / weld wearing jogging bottoms and they end up looking like a colander.

Done it once. Cheap and nasty t shirt smouldering away. Was a hot day and took a while to notice it

I often wear shorts when I'm working (combat style with extra pockets or aldi//lidl "builders" style), not long ago I was grinding welds down on something held in a vice (anyone who has seen my welding knows that's not a quick job !).
Finished the job, tidied up, went inside and realised the shorts now had a large veltilation hole at the front where the grinding sparks had been hitting.

They were ideal for anyone wanting to attend a YMCA or Freddie Mercury tribute evening, not a lot of use for anything else.

If I'm doing sustained grinding I make sure the sparks are angled away from me, if I can't avoid the sparks I use a leather welding apron

Don't feel bad, it happens to quite a few people (me included).

I've got some flame retardant overalls but to be honest, I rarely wear them as it's a pain getting in & out of them. I usually wear a lab coat for welding/grinding/machining as it's also flame retardant and a lot easier to wear.

Do they make lightweight flame retardent overalls? I only have experience of wearing one pair, and found them to be a chore in the summer months.

Yes , There is alot of FR use in much hotter places than here lol saudi etc , you'll find light weight ones with a little digging

Here is some roots on - Ebay . Roots very good quality L/W for lightweight and Im pretty sure their stock getting cleared which is why they are so cheap compared to arco ones.

Forget what to wear...stuff is going to get alight one way or another! I've actually had more minor injuries burning myself trying to put things out with my bare hand than setting light to things....now I always wear a leather glove on my left hand as that the hand I instinctively use to put things out..brain only kicks in 2 seconds after I've done it!

My top tip...never use panel wipe before grinding...that stuff will catch from the bin at the other end of the garage!

Posted this before, but these are my flame resistant overalls being dried on the back deck of the ship I was working on. They're pretty lightweight, thin fabric, and while not 'fireproof' they don't go up in flames easily.

The reason they are inflated to my shape is the engine room door is opposite, blasting warm air out. This was in the southern end of the Gulf of Mexico, summer months, and it was hot. A couple of hours working on the back deck and I'd be as sopping wet with sweat as if I'd climbed out of a shower.

Denim is as good as anything for resisting sparks, avoid polyester and fleece at any cost they melt and stick to you.

This implies that I have endless pairs of ****ty jeans just for this... I do lol. But sometimes I prefer to just go into the garage with whatever im wearing and put my overalls on and crack on.

ive never had the leg or waist set on fire yet however im aware dont have cotton loose on them either as they will set fire

the ones wear holes have started to apear in them but not fully through

Polyester joggers catch fire then drip mollten PET onto your leg which has to be picked out of said leg once solidified, which also sticks to your hand as you try and beat the flames out, causing painfull burns to both.
