Alluminium Soldering Problem

Hello, Can anyone describe the process of soldering alluminium? What preperation is needed? Rods? Flux? etc. We have been Tig Welding it but its slow and prone to showing my mistakes. Soldering might be easier!

u can braze aluminium with technoweld which has a lower melting point than the ally a member called alarming entertainment sells it on ebay post no 220434019040

okay I know this is not soldering but you can weld it with tig filler rods.

I have used the Technoweld type rods a few times and find in the right application they work great. use youtube and watch a few demmo's first. you really will be surprised what a strong job they make.

I can vouch for the durafix product.... but then, i'm a little biased....
Seriously though, I can't work out why it's not more popular than it is... after all.... it works. Very well. It is primarily designed for repair work though, but it's uses are only limited by the imagination of the user. I have built up van racking, shelving systems, brackets, repaired aluminium ladders and added brackets for buckets.... etc etc., and it does exactly what it says on the tin. If any other pro welding companies would like to try a sample, please let me know.

I've seen someone demonstrate this or something like this at Rufforth auto jumble and although it appears really impressive (cant help being a bit sceptical at stuff demo'd at shows sorry) I seem to remember they were quite expensive - how do they compare to the price of tig rods. We already have the welder at work so they'd have to be a good price to make it worthwhile buying some. Which possibly is why they're not more popular.

he got right pi ,..,.ed off when i mentioned technoweld he winds up easily on a finer note its not a gimmic and anyone who hasnt the welding gear for ally will benefit from it look the vids up on u tube

The rods are expensive (about £10 a metre?) but a blowlamp is much cheaper than an A/C TIG set! I bought some but I've only used it on test pieces - worked well on T joints and lap joints 16swg ally. Tried it to repair a stripped tapped hole in a casting by using the instructions, that worked too. W/A Oops should have posted this on next thread up!

Much cheaper in the long run if you are welding light stuff but if you want to do thick stuff get an O/A set

These rods look the business and have known a few experienced guys to try them out with good reviews, very strong once welded.

the reason there dearer is there brazing rods not welding rods. they melt at a lower temperature than the parts u are welding so no chance of melting
whatever u are repairing or or joining together

I think they are more for people who dont have the equipment to gas or tig weld aluminium rather than because they dont have the skill.

sorry, sorry am getting a lot of hate for that comment. I'm just saying in the long run think about it, TurboTorch costs 70euro ish MAPP gas about 15-20euro and then rods 12 euros a meter(I take into consideration what brightspark said about melting at a lower temperature, but I still think it is expensive) so thats 97euros just to get started. And those mapp gas cylinders last no time at all, so 120euro for oxy turbo kit, then mig wire or tig rods and a flux so about 200 euro for a lot of welds.

just a healthy discussion . i have all the torches and gear just 2 tight to buy a length of the stuff as i can bum sum of me bruv if needed
