alloy welding help

hi, is there anyone here who could help with this.

the mig welder we use at work has starting welding badly but only since the wire was changed. the weld has started to look like there is no gas available but there is. we had an engineer out today and he thinks the problem could be that the pull mechanism in the torch not working would be the problem but i think otherwise.

the new wire is the same gauge but seems a lot stiffer than the old and we have been told there is a different amount of silicone in the new wire to the old. not sure what that means tho

anyone know if the wire could be problem and how its solved if it is

Sounds like the old was 4043 and new is 5356.

4043 is soft and melts easily. 5356 is stiffer and has magnesium added. The magnesium tends to leave a black soot if the torch angle is not right or not enough gas. The wire feed rate on 5356 also tends to be slower.

thanks for reply, im not sure which 1 we have on welder so will check tomorrow at work. the weld turns out very shiny with a lot of soot around the whole weld

Also, on the off chance that it's an expensive piece of kit (with push pull torch) I wonder if it may be a synergic mig. A synergic unit set for 4043, wouldn't like 5356 at all.

Are you pulling the gun, it gives less gas cover and causes sooting more than pushing the gun forwards.

Hi. Yes its 5356 but the paperwork says the program selected is ok for this wire. Still very sooty so going to change back to old wire

It's on the synergic setting with the pulse.

The welder is a cebora sound mig 2035/m

I'm not familiar with that exact machine. Synergic migs that I have had experience with, have diff programs for 5% Mag 5356 and 5% Silicone 4043.
