I'm not exaggerating, those are the facts. The energy storage density of fossil fuels is so incredibly high and easy to use. Saying "electric will be OK" doesn't fix the problem.

EV is a flawed technology. Electric vehicle battery prices have shot up due to materials getting hard to find, not even mentioning use of child labour. EV owners will very soon be getting a HUGE kick in the wallet as road duty is currently not retreivable THEY WILL BE MADE PAY. What happens redundant EV batteries ? They are not recycleable and an explosion threat in even trying to. Nor can they be landfilled for the same reason India and China do not want them what does that say ?. Read yesterday of a hybrid Mercedes with battery failure £14,000 quote to replace.. EV NO THANKS.

With a major shake-up of the transport system its achievable, leccy hgv`s are out there already. May have to get the long haul HGV`s cargo off the roads and onto the railways .

Nope, it’s just not an issue. Given the money you can have almost whatever power number you care to pluck out of the air.
As we are, we have enough power, granted some maybe imported but we don’t have rolling black-outs.

HPC will be online in 5 years (we have nearly 20 remember), that alone is over 3200,000KW so nearly 9000 of those super fast chargers.
There is talk of two more HPC type reactors. Rolls Royce deploying small reactors in every city and the huge proposed increase in wind & solar. Then we have extra import, for example the Moroccan project alone at 10GW.
Countless more, yes many will fade away to nothing but there is just so much on the table, actual power is no problem.

It costs £68 at todays best rate to fill that Merc truck, at 400kWh.
At 9Mpg quoted earlier, that’s nearly £200 in Diesel for the 250 miles.

44t lorry 7.6 mpg average
500 miles travel (small range really) - 296 litres diesel
approximates into 2960 KWh potential energy
30% efficiency (being kind) = 888 KWh

Now lets disregard the electrical energy losses and assume you just need 888 KWh of electrical energy to take 44 tons 500 miles (in reality you need more)

"will charge 80% in an hour" - so 80% of 888KWh in 1 hour = 710KW quick chargers? REALLY? Where's this distribution network going to come from?

That's a lot of cups of tea we're not going to be able to make to find the electrickery from somewhere . . .assuming France doesn't accidently unplug us anyway . . .

I have never looked at the economics of rail, I was stuck at a level crossing in Southampton the other day and a container train went by, I counted forty five forty foot containers behind that one Loco, it must be way more efficient than running forty five trucks.

Has to be. I've had plenty of opportunity around here to count similar things - there are several level crossings around here - one of them supposedly down for 50 minutes in every hour!

I've sat for 40 mins at USA railroad crossings watching a freight train go by . . . then raced up the road in an attempt to beat it to the next one as the same line criss-crossed the road several times -I have a suspicion that that one actually stretched far enough to cause both crossings to be down a few miles apart at the same time . . .

I believe this will change, maybe gradually, but it will, as it should.

I know I have mentioned this before but it still blows my mind.
To put battery power in perspective the World's biggest battery like this will power a large ship for 1hr! Yes just 1hr!
The same amount of fuel oil would occupy 7 pallet IBCs.
A container ship stuffed totally full of batteries might just be able to reach the UK from China but there would be no cargo at all.

Will be way before 2040 for buying new. The new Mercedes eActros will run from one end of England to the other(well Exeter to Manchester at least), has over 500hp and will charge 80% in an hour, plugged in at a distribution warehouse bay and it will be more time efficient than using petrol stations. Admittedly the Mercedes’ does have some major drawbacks still, for example it’s only a 25t payload rigid rather than a proper lorry but that’s ready now.

By 2040 the whole cab will be replaced by batteries/fuel cells and nobody will know what a lorry driver is

I for one don't want to be driving then. Have you ever tried ring for technical help or anything else for that matter . They always say sorry to keep you waiting but my computer has just crashed or frozen or running slow.
I have seen loads of blue screens of death or crashed MDT's

Nearly 20 years ago I visited a very large open cast mine.
The haul trucks were hybrids. They picked up power from overhead wires - as electric trains - on the long uphill haul out of the mine. Small diesel engine (relatively!) on the level run to the crusher and back to the top of the incline.
Regenerative braking all the way back down to the mine.

Ironically they were being replaced by all diesels as the state-owned power company would not supply enough power!

I have long been curious why motorways don't have overhead wires over the inside lane to recharge battery wagons as they run.

I'm old enough to remember the last tram lines being removed. Then the last Sunbeam trolleybuses being phased out for dirty dieseasels. What goes around comes around.

They have just shut the tram network in Wolverhampton for a month for safety reasons....
