I've been trying to write up pros and cons of different types of arc welder. The only pro I can come up with for this sort of thing is "Cheap".

To a great extent these are a waste of money. They are the most difficult to use of any arc welder, so most DIY buyers will decide they don't like the process and give up. The duty cycles are annoyingly low. They are only really suitable for someone who wants an arc welder for very occasional use and doesn't want to spend money.

I know someone who bought one, and added a computer fan to cool it,

it doubled the duty time.

to about 10 mins.

Put your money towards a better welder I reckon. I think you have to be reasonably well skilled and experienced to produce a decent weld from them. And, if you're that proficient already you probably wouldn't touch kit like that with a barge pole or have something better already in the workshop.

They are very cheap but at the same time they are not "entry level" unfortunately.

They are pretty unsuitable to beginners and anyone trying to learn or improve their technique.

It could be just me of course......

I really should get one then - I seem to like modifying cheap crap and trying unsuccessfully to make it work better!!!

Well I don't know about their arc welder but I recon one of those sack barrows could be the basis for my new tig/plasma trolley, seams cheap enough....an' bigish wheels...er will i need to make covers for them? sparks and rubber tyres...!!
