The Aldi set? I've never purchased one, simply due to the fact that I can't force myself to get past the appearance of cheesy quality, so I'm guessing they're not much cop in general. Definitely not worth spending hours trying to extract the broken tap when it inevitably happens. The die holders just scream monkey metal at you when you look at them.

Got some bolts but I only need two,did not really want the bolt head type but the hex or allen key type.
Those where in the US though and Titanium and at £3 a pop.

If you have never purchased something then you don't have claim to whether its sh*t or not,only when you have purchased/borrowed and used can you claim its quality.

Only broken the smallest of the taps in the set and you can break that size tap quite easly whether top quality or not.

M7 was invented so that its a thread you won't have taps, dies or bolts for, other wise life would be too easy. Once M7 is widespread they will start using M9.

If thinking that makes you happier, continue to do so. Perish the thought that some could possibly have enough gumption to gauge general quality just from feel and sight alone....

The name Aldi kind of gives you a clue, there not engineers tools, there going to cut rough but use able threads.

while its true they aren't engineers tools they are as good as if not better than halfords and MM stuff and certainly of better quality than you'll find in the AMtech bargain /boot sales

carbon steel will cut virtualy anything u require even stainless in small amounts using cutting compound .just make sure u get a branded name. dormer presto or goliath or simlar

Nobody can expect them to be of good quality, they'll be made down to a price which is what 99% of all their customers will want. How many will never actually use them, and out of those who do how many will just use the M6 tap once to attempt to repair their motorbike after a bolt shears off?


I've used several cheap tap and die sets. They do the job to an acceptable standard for most things but aren't very good. The tap holders are junk and I use an adjustable spanner, proper tap handle or something else to turn them.
They go blunt very, very quickly. Fine for doing the odd job in soft metal but you don't get many threads out of them.
Because they only do one size for all they've a mild taper on which is useless for bottoming out in a blind hole and also poor to start a thread with, it's a compromise.
But the price of a cheap set can be close to a a 3 piece set of good quality taps for one particular size and pitch, so they can make a lot of sense!

Minarelli you are correct. I was crossed up with Magneti Marelli.

I've got a set of the aldi workzone taps and dies, pretty handy kit for the money. They are all taper taps though (no seconds or plugs) but it does include 1/8" and 1/4" bsp which are dead handy. Not sure if its still the same kit but for the money you can't go wrong.
Laser market a brilliant set, really comprehensive with all the odd ball metric fine sizes.

yep its the nephews only bought it a week ago, main brgs have worn the crank and it moving up the down
the rs125 uses the rotax123. I have several rotax's around the place here.

Only the oldest ones, most now are on the 122.

Rotax are strange, their numbers dont seem to follow logic do they.
