Aldi/Ferrex Oscillating Multi-Tool....

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago - and got to use it for the first time (with any of these types of tool) today.

Job was to cut through the Sealant/Mastic gumming a Fiamma opening Vent thingummy on my old LDV Camper fibreglass hi-top roof. It's been evident for a while that the thing has been leaking.

I've been dreading doing this job, as before any attempt at getting old Sikaflex Mastic out and remove/replace - has been a very tough job, fraught with broken Stanley Blades, near-missed and lots of straining and cursing.

What a revelation! This wee tool proved fantastic for this job - has paid for its paltry £15 (delivered) outlay already just in the hassle, stress and effort saved today. Really chuffed.

(I saw on here that you can get decent carbide blades so you can cut /grind thin sheet metal??? Just the thing for getting into tight corners when trying to get to clean metal patching up said van?? Can anyone recommend a product?)

similar to my experience with the aldi battery version that I recently bought to do a specific job on some woodwork that needed cutting out, my first time with this type of multi tool as well

was pleased to find I could do a decent job one handed which was handy and felt that the tool had paid for itself in the first use

If I need a really precise cut in steel I sometimes use mine instead of the grinder because it's very controllable. For car steel work I prefer the half moon shaped cutters....they do blunt but the half moon has a lot more teeth to begin with!

Mine current one is a dewalt 18v...I've previously had 2 Bosch 240v ones but they have (or at least had) a design weakness....the motor wires would snap. I would solder them up but just kept happening which was a pain so I switched to Dewalt.

I've had my DeWalt for 6 years. It's been hammered and won't die.

Using it for an hour at a time cutting out hardwood cills. Floors etc.

Is there any "special" attachment blade you use when cutting steel - or just an ordinary curved blade?

I always make sure they say metal on them. I cut out the wheel arch on my Figaro with one...it was very precise (mm perfect). The teeth do get trashed...but Vs the cost of a new repair panel it was worth it. You can rotate the half moon to get into some tight spots too using the ends of the blade.

You have to go slow and don't force the tool...just let it work at its own pace.
