Aldi Clamps this Sunday

Seriously,I ain't no metalurgist or worked with steel/metal on a proffessional basis but I find that clamps bar almost impossible to bend at its strongest point ie bent at the side over rather than the flat, unreal.

I mean if anything was gonna give it would have been the cast iron jaw of the clamp would have snapped.

Theres a difference between using a clamp to hold something in place, and using a clamp, with a long piece of tube on the handle to get more leverage, using it to pull together two heavy pieces of steel/plate whatever that don't really want to meet.
We have a few record G clamps kicking around that have lasted quite well, some tip to one side when you tighten them as they have deformed, and a lot of carver clamps that are used heavily every day, and are virtually unbreakable.
The difference between light and heavy duty i suppose. Horses for courses.

With the plastic pads, it looks as if these F clamps are really intended for woodwork. Anything used for welding is likely to have a hard life by comparison, with heat and spatter.

For £2 each, a tenner for five, these look OK if you're a little bit careful with them, and better value than similar cheap F clamps from the sheds.

I don't think there's any serious suggestion these would put up with industrial use. From what I've seen of Aldi/Lidl stuff there's usually a clear statement that the items are not designed for hire, trade or industrial use.

I don't think anyone was condemming them as such, they will do what they are designed for and in relation to the work some on here do, that means light stuff, and that's fine by me and probably many others who will buy them. Other members would not touch them with a barge pole because they are into heavy work and need professional heavy duty clamps and I understand that.

I will explain why I occasionaly post about the Aldi offers.

I get mailed about the upcoming Aldi offers, many members on this forum don't get the mail..... so if there are any tools I think members may be interested in, I post the info here....simply to help out those that are perhaps on a tight budget or don't need the best money can buy.

I did the same with the metal care paint and many members knew nothing about the offer, went out and bought some and found it excellent stuff at a big saving on similar products.

What I don't want to happen each time is another long winded discussion / arguments on how good or bad Aldi stuff is, I think that's been hammered out enough and no one is forcing anyone to buy.

We all have different requirements for our tools and therefore some of us can get away with cheap and cheerful whilst others need the best.

Dunno, you can pay over £200 for an 80 amp inverter on ebay if you want to. Paying £200 doesn't make it any good and there's certainly better value for your £200 to be had elsewhere.

I'd say it's more accurate to say you don't get what you don't pay for, but any fool can be ripped off.

With tools it's more or less price against the amount and type of use you are going to give them. A bloke who buys an angle grinder to cut up some scrap and a few slabs and uses it about once every year for five minutes doesn't need to spend £70 on a Metabo.

There's also the question of suitability. Excellent woodworking clamps are likely to be abused for welding, and welding clamps aren't great for woodwork.

Well stay away from their Circular bench saws and Tile cutting bench saws,these are the same carcass with different blades.

I did find the bench pillar drill a bargain though 5 years ago,still going strong after many uses,I converted it from belt driven to one timing belt and variable speed control...much better.

I buy all my angle grinders from Aldi. £15 and the one I bought over three years ago has just packed up. I've been robbed! I've hammered it mercilessly every day and now I'm going to have to spend another £15! Or I could spend god knows how much on a bosch or whatever and it miight last a bit longer. Maybe.
