Aldi Bench Drill

This guys Aldi pillar bench drill says it came with a rack and pinion work table-,has anyone bought one of these drills in the past or over the last 12 months? I bought mine well over 8 or 9 years ago and doesn't sport a rack and pinion so I'm assuming mines an early version?

Will sort a rack and pinion for my work table now

Will have to extend my pillar,never gave it a thought to do this,bit of a thingymagig the way he's extended his,two poles and a center pole in the inners of the two poles and then araldited them together,obviously can't weld.

By the time you have gone to all that effort on a drill that's still going to have a small throat and lightweight flexible construction it would be better to sell it and buy an old heavy drill, my 1940ish! drill was £150 so they not expensive, and it's a pleasure to use.

Try finding one lately! They are becoming much sought after and those that are available seem to command much higher prices than they used to.

Is the table really that heavy it needs a rack & pinion? The way he has extended the pillar is simple and effective in keeping the two parts parallel and concentric with no distortion involved from welding that would require machining.

Unfortunately, the whole thing is made from cheese and firmly set custard. The pillar flexes like it was a fishing rod in a previous life and the quill has so much slop on it it's ideal for drilling oval holes.

I've got an Aldi pillar drill, and mine doesn't have a rack and pinion on the table either. I can't remember when I bought mine, but probably 4-5 years ago, £40-odd quid. It's handy for that price, but it's not magnificent. Often easier to use than figuring out how to hold the workpiece to use a hand-drill though - I've been making repair sections that need holes for plug-welding, and I think it's saved a lot of time there. I guess if I put it to a lot harder work it might have trouble, and I don't think the chuck is centred - though that might be the way I've sharpened the drill bits.

They still pop up sensibly priced from time to time, just don't bother looking on EBay! For some reason people seem to pay way over the odds for stuff on there.

Perhaps you got the bad one? have to say a little improvement has made mine satisfactory,I mean if you pay lucky mini money don't expect the rolls royce but you can make an improvement like using better bearings and a few tweeks....providing you know how to tweek em.
