Fired it up for a little go:

Need to sort the variable speed controller out, havent a clue what speeds I need to be cutting at but guess that will be the learning curve!

start cutting on low speeds and feed and work your way up depending on what metal u are cutting. u will soon get the idea by the sound of the cutter and vibration on machine

Cheers Brightspark, currently im going to be cutting aluminium for the foreseable future. I can change speed via the belts on the pulleys but its a right faff tbh! Looking forward to using it this week

u can get the charts giving speeds and feeds using diffrent size cutterson diffrent metals to give u an idea. i just make calculated guess and if it sounds ok go for it

Apologies for reviving this thread, but this is the same Ajax mill as the one i picked up a few days ago.
Just got it in the workshop, Did think of scrapping it but as its basically all there its worth restoring.
Problem is it had been bodged up with a washing machine motor bolted onto a shuttering ply mounting sat on top of it. That has been removed & it looks a darn sight better already. I have a motor that is suitable but if anyone can give me an idea what the speed range is on these so i can plan a new drive for it i would be grateful!

Just found a brass plate on the mill that has the speeds engraved on it 290, 210, 165 & 60 rpm
Then i found this handy pulley calculator ,http://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belt.aspx ,

That's handy cheers, I was going to have a look at mine today to see if it had any info. It has moved from its resting place into my workshop and is actually work in progress! I have only had it 10 years or so. In my defence I have been gathering bits to make a vertical head for it to make it more useful and planning a stand to put it on.
