Airfix Ford 3 litre GT

Bored while recuperating from a knee operation my wife gave me this Airfix kit to build that I got in a secret Santa last year.

It's only a starter kit so I thought it shouldn't be too difficult to build.
That was before I spotted how small the dashboard decals are!


I think I got the oil temp and pressure gauges mixed up
Paint and glue everywhere and it's missing the rear tie rods as I just couldn't see them well enough.
Camber and caster will probably need some adjustments before it hits the track!
At least I now know not to bother trying to build my nice Tamiya kits I've had stashed for years and making a massive mess of them.

I was talking to a chap whilst on holiday a few years ago. He was building a kit of a Second World War bomber can't remember which one possibly a Lanc. He said he'd either scratch built or it was included in the kit the radio operator or navigator's position. When I said but you can't see it! His answer was "no you can't but I know it"s there"

I've got a Ducati 900ss kit that's been in a cupboard for the last twenty years, the way my hands are that's where it'll stay. I remember doing Airfix kits when I was a nipper, more glue on the outside of the model and on my fingers than on the joints where it was supposed to be.

I was obsessed with plastic model kits when younger but since playing with real motorbikes and cars they no longer tempt me

I have an urge to build an aircraft kit for some reason, I’ve no idea why…. I’m not even sure which aircraft I’d want to build a model of, maybe a Lightning or an F-14, or one of the SAAB jets. Sadly I really don’t have time, but it could be a nice relaxing project (or a massively frustrating blood pressure raising one!)….

Not done any since i got back into arty stuff, but when i was a kid i used to be a member of the airfix modelling club, the president was Dick Emery i think i still have all the details in the loft.

I say this a lot when I’m working.

No one will ever see it but I know so it’s got to be right!

Back on topic, I used to make models as a kid. Occasionally fancy doing them now but then I wonder what I’ll do once they’re finished?! Got enough crap lying round collecting dust without making more….

@Olderisbetter, me too, and my 2 cousins. Would have been late 70's ? We used to do mainly second world war planes, had the 1/24th Hurricane and Harrier. I would love to have time to do some more. Really fancy some early GP cars.

I probably averaged one kit a week as a nipper, used to have the planes hanging by cotton on my bedroom ceiling until a huge Sunderland flying boat model fell to it's doom I would also customise the bike kits, my most ambitious was a BMW R69 with a raked frame and scratch built springer forks.

The planes on fishing wire was my method but i started using the old wooden tea chests with two sides removed to make scenery for planes and tanks, they used to tale months to finish.

DH Mosquito would be my choice, built a lot of WW2 planes as a kid, then moved onto 1/24 cars - and scratchbuilt a couple, starting with Airfix kits for wheels etc but "fabricating" the bodies, midget race cars etc.

My mum binned them when I moved out to a shared house and had nowhere to keep 'em

Was 2nd hand when dad got it for me as a kid... must have been in the loft 45 years

Ive got about a dozen model boat kits that'll I'll be convering to radio control when I get round to it, so that should keep me going for at least another 12 years
