Air filters

Now I'm starting to use sanding machines in the workshop, started noticing a fine layer of dust appearing, (just the odd bit which is escaping the extraction on the machines themselves. Not massive amounts). So..., are these type of thing any good?

I don't have one myself, but, over on the woodworking forum, the
question often comes up.
They seem to have very good reviews, most especially the Record
Power offering.

I've an Axminster branded one I fitted 20 ish years ago in my workshop. I'd say it's worth it.

I have the Rutlands version, very good and makes a huge difference, great with the timer set so you can leave it running for an hour or two when you shut up shop. Not good enough as a stand alone extractor but for the fine airborne stuff - brilliant.

here u go.....no fancy prices for the Record garbage....loads'a complaint about the remote control and it's electronics....plus often the thing switches itself on and again often it wont switch off...
over priced rebadged garbage.....
this is what I made from a used 6" wall fan and other junk....mine came from a bathroom remodel but new they are around £20......
the filter is from a 500HP Scania....free in skips.....and if it's good enought for a £10,000 engine it's good enough for me....
mine hang from the light chains and take its power from the same....the fan is only stupid low whatage.....very quiet......
I used a mower type plug for easy lift off maintainence...

I also kept the pull cord for indiviual use and when the lights go off so do the fans....
the fan moves something like 11cu,m of air a min....please check that out....
I have three in a very big w/shop...
remember the air comes in from the OUTSIDE thru the filter and back out again.....
easy enough to redesign for ur situation...

I've got that one and would recommend it; might also be worth checking out Axminster's similar offering. I've had mine for several years and have had the controller circuit board replaced twice under warranty (in warranty) but its been fine ever since.

Not always. There are occasions I prefer to make the things necessary. Time constraints are usually the main factor. Plus, buying something means you have it, rather than just spending months intending to make/do it.

If you did want to roll your own, have a look at G4 pleated panel filters. They are used in fresh air systems for commercial kitchens, come in various sizes (600 x 600 nominal is most common) and are very cheap.

Would those be postable?

They are in bigger boxes than the filter size as usual so the most you would get in a small parcel is 6 filters, £10 would get you 6 filters including the UK royal mail post, I think there is about 20 filters left at the mo

Had a look at that one. Not the cheapest option, but the styling/cabinet looks a tad more refined than the others. Looks like it uses the same filters as the Record? I'm thinking I may go for that one.

Do they have a cover holding the filters in? Those don't seem to be shown in the photo's.

Theres a small cover on the side that comes off allowing you to slide the filters out.

I took the plunge & ordered that one. Should be here tomorrow, hopefully.

Realised that if I went down the self build route, I'd probably still be "getting round to it" 3 months from now.

Timely thread! I’ve just got the itech one at the top for use in a fabrication shop fantastic unit unbelievable how much stuff it is taking in!

I’m debating to get the big unit as well or just a second of the same and maybe the record power unit for the machine shop to take out any dust etc.


These are the filters after a few hours of not particularly dusty work!
