Air Filter Foam?

Morning all!

My ancient old Hayter Hobby lawnmower needs a new filter element, and it'll probably be cheapest to buy some foam and make my own. Can anyone recommend a particular type of foam that I should be looking for? Or where to get it from?

It is a Briggs & Stratton engine, by the way, and the original air filter was a foam thing in a sheet metal housing about 3.5" X 2" or so.

I need to cut the grass today, so I'm just going to use a kitchen scourer (sp?) for today, but I doubt it will last vey long. Should be OK as a temporary thing though?

Fish tank filter foam works as air filter, spray a bit of WD on it or stretch a bit of nylon stocking over the opening as a stop gap.

Just make sure it's open cell foam, not closed cell. If in doubt, try breathing through it.

Sorry for late reply Windy, out working in the garden 'til after nine last night and collapsed when I got in.

Will go and check whether it's open/closed cell (I think it's open) this morning. I'll let you know mate

No problems - I assume we ARE talking about filter foam here, and not just 'ordinary' upholstery foam? Again I am assuming that there is a difference?
