I started building a retaining wall a while back, and am still on with the job doing a bit when I am able to.
I have recently been studying online clips concerning the immense water pressure/and earth force that can be created behind such walls.
A lot of the advice online is like being in an algebra lesson and mostly goes over my head. Any guidance in layman’s terms would be appreciated.
My construction comprises 7.2 Newton dense concrete blocks at the front, and house bricks behind. This means a solid wall of about 9 inch including the mortar between the two courses. In a length of under 40ft I have 4 brick columns on the rear side for additional support. The base of the wall is concrete footing, not a tamped gravel base which I have seen some use. Water drainage holes have been provided along the length of the wall. Wall height will be 5ft, about the same height as the soil being retained.
The only thing I wish I had possibly done differently is extended the footing laterally towards the soil by about 2ft wide L shape as shown in this clip:
One question I do have is, “what size gravel would be most appropriate for back filling the area between the soil & wall for drainage” ?
Any tips however basic would be appreciated.
