advice on welder ive bought cheap please

hello ive bought a sureweld monomig 1o1 of my neighbour over the road cheap
are they any good i want to repair some rust on my work van (transit)
can i use it gasless or is it only to be used with gas
if its worth keeping i would like to put a steel liner in it needs new tips e.t.c
also can anyone supply me with the bits i need please
any advice much appreciated thank you

Hi,

it should be OK assuming it goes to a low enough voltage, I'm not familar with that particular model. It looks like it's gas only as you can't swap the polarity on the torch & earth.

It's difficult to tell but it looks like it'll only take the small wire spool, so it could get expensive if you're doing a lot of work with it.

Replacement parts may be a problem but for things like a liner you could ask Weldequip on here as a general purpose one should be OK.

As with all things, get some scrap metal around 1mm thick and try the four power settings at different wire speeds. You'll soon see if it'll work on a car or not.

You are gonna have to first assess how much welding will need doing. Then if its say more than a few feet, you might be better of getting a large bottle adapter and hiring or borrowing a proper sized bottle of gas, as those tiny bottles have about 10 minutes of gas in them. Therefore they get expensive pretty quickly.

Can you tell us how low the amps are on the lowest setting ? 25 or 30 etc? If its over 30 you might have a problem if its bodywork your after welding, as it may be a bit too powerfull. Also you will need 0.6mm wire to help reach the lowest setting, it wont do this with 0.8mm wire.

With any look someone who owns or knows about these welders will join in and help. Also any pics you can give us of what needs welding will be a big help.

ps: i belive they (sureweld) will either email or post manuals out to people.

will probably have 100s of questions to ask once have tried it out

Remember, you can never breed decent quality from poor stock.

If you wish to do cars (esp the thinner gauge 0.8 or 0.6), a stitch function can come in super handy. Neither of these machines have that. The stitch function provides good penetration without burn through. With MIG a decent torch and good wire feed motor is really essential if you want to keep your helmet in one piece. Bad wire feed will drive you up the walls, out of your garage and straight to cheap liquor. Not good!!
