advice on trraining?

Hi all,
I am taking a level 2 nvq course in preformance engineering which laregly covers all aspects of welding and fabrications, incluing how to read drawing. but what i want to know is asuming i pass my course will that be a high enough qualification to start a reasonably well payed roll or should i continue studying? and should i study by a academic route or a more hands on roll e.g a apprenticeship?

Your level 2 nvq course is a good start but you should continue studying. If you have the aptitude you should do both, but consentrate on the hands on approch via an apprenticeship with day release (if you can get one).

So many people have gone down the pure academic route, that in a few yrs time when old buggers like me have stoped, the few skilled workers left, will be in a very powerfull position over the "academic experts" (who can recite the chemical composition of 316 stainless but couldnt pick it out from steel, brass or ally, & think a horizontal fillet is a bit of fish).

Read thro threads on this site, lot of good info. Make some mistakes and learn from them, better still learn from others mistakes, less painfull.
Above all keep safe, so you get buried with all the bits you were born with.

Hi, having gone down the apprentice route myself and now mainly involved in supply of engineering consumables. In my opinion if you can get an apprenticeship then go for it but do not stop studying and if you get the chance i am asumming (the mother of all **** ups) its just mechanical, try and get some electrical qualifications aswell as fitters that are also qualified for electrical work are very hard to come by. The unfortunate part of engineering is that the industry that used to support it is dying away, the up side to this is that skilled workers will be hard to find and ill be worth more.

Over 40 years ago my old man was one of four thousand apprentices working in the aircraft factory in Belfast.
