I own a 1963 scout 80 and recently both spring perches on my axle broke free of the axle due to all four welds breaking. This obviously allowed my axle to rotate, binding my U joint/ driveline. My neighbor, a professional welder, has offered his services and has told me it is not necessary to grind off the old welds, that he would just "burn" some new ones on. I do not know what he means by burn new ones on. I'm curious if this is kosher as I thought to properly weld these perches back on that surely I would have to grind the old welds off for a good strong lasting weld. I do not want this to happen again. I myself do not weld, but I will be doing all the labor involved.
So I have two options, option one being leave my axle on and neighbor burns welds on while everything is bolted up to the truck. Option two being I remove my axle, grind off old welds, lay new weld, bolt axle back up. Option one is waaaaay less work but I want to do what is right. Any advice is much appreciated!!! Thank you!!!
