The DW series is just a rehash of the old XU engine so earlier versions had the same reliability as the old smog generators. All the common engine problems only started cropping up when the emissions systems were introduced.
If you were a slightly unscrupulous character, a little tickle of the DPF with a grinder to free it of the filter material, blocking up the return valve on the EGR and mapping out these two as well as the adblue system and you’d be left with something more akin to a 90s XU which would still be trundling along when the chassis had rotten out.
