Advice on MIG welder for a mini

Hi All,

New to the forum. I'm after a decent quality MIG welder for a mini project.

I was looking at the Clarke 160TM, seems to be a decent choice for use with refillable cylinders.

My only concern is that 30A may be a bit high for welding the floor in a classic mini....

Should I be looking at say a Clarke Pro 90 for the 25A setting? It doesnt seem as well setup for refillable cylinders but then if 30A is going to be too high for what i need it for then perhaps I will have to compromise?

Opinions would be much appreciated.

If you use the thin metal technique (http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/thin-metal.htm) you shouldn't have any problems.

I have the 160tm myself and recently did my first wheel arch repair, which turned out very well for my first ever welding project.

i have a sealey 170/1 for sale and have used it on thin material
as its got 0.6 wie in it

Agreed with the above. I use a simmilar power welder- a Clark 150TE and the lower settings (30A, I think?) with 0.6mm wire are easily low enough for thin sheet metal repairs. As above, use the thin metal technique and all will be well.

I use the 150TE with 0.8 wire and usually using it on the second lowest setting (Low 2) whaterever that corresponds too. It gives me really nice results with not too much penetration and a very flat weld so not too much grinding to do afterwards!
I have also just done a full mini with it, including rear boot floor, all rear subframe mounts, inner and outer sills and alot of patching in the floor panels.

I use a Clarke 151TE but I think it has the same power settings as the 160, generally I find I am also on setting low 2, which is fine when using argon mix but a little to much with just co2
